I have not been without at least one dog for most of my 57...
and with my ole gal gone I find myself
looking for her and listening for her
to click through the house(toenails)
and I just need a dog with me..
A friend called to offer me a golden that someone
has to give away but I've already decided that I'll never have another golden
They are wonderful but that is the breed that my x and I bred for years
and it's time to move forward not stay in a rut!
I have a chance to have a great dane in exchange for some money owed me
and I am thinking I may go look at them. I know the mother dog and she is wonderful!
What do you all think?

Since you are already considering it, I say go for it. Nothing will ever replace the one you lost, but fortunately we have always have enough love for yet one more. Besides, you sound lonely and in need of another friend!

I think you should get you another companion also raydene and the great dane may just be something that would work well for you. I love dogs too and always say if something happens to mine, I would not own anymore because of the time and expense, but I love them so much, I know i would have to have another one for companionship.

Oh I love danes. I have never owned one but I would love to. I have a huge akita and a tiny mini daschound and love them both they are great companions. I would be lost without my furry babies. Them give me someone to talk to who always understands, they give me unconditional love, they admire me. I just love them.

You are wise to not revisit the bad memories with your ex and the golden. If you want a great dane, it would be great, especially if you are owed money. I cannot picture you without a dog, just from these discussions. A nice young dog will be something to fully occupy your mind and your time. I like large dogs, but do not want to own one. I have always had cats, and I actually believe that as these die off, I will not replace them. I want to travel and I worry about the care they receive when I am gone, even for a couple of days. But for you, that sounds wonderful, to be able to pick your puppy and raise it from day one.

I love dogs and cats, and I would take anyone that needed love even a golden even if all I had was golden before, but if you want to try something different go for it. It really is your choice.

I am in your situation too. I have been without a dog for a year but I am planning to have another one soon. If you like the breed (great danes) than go for it. If you have enough space for such a large dog. Dogs are faithful and its rewarding to have their company at the end of the day. I was always looking forward to go back home and find my dog waiting for me besides the door. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I think a Great Dane would make a great pet. They are beautiful dogs. Just make sure you know enough about them before you commit to having one of your own, ie what health problems do they commonly have?
I'm getting my pug puppy tomorrow night and it is so exciting to watch a puppy grow into a beautiful dog! So I think you should go for it.

I know how you must be feeling after losing your old gal - the house seems empty with out her, you keep waiting for her to appear, etc. She was your constant and loyal companion and you miss her just being there.
Getting another dog is a big commitment Raydene, but you know that, it's part and parcel of owning a dog! We have always had dogs, I can't remember a time without them, life would seem very strange.
I don't know much about Great Danes (except that they are huge, lol!), but I'm sure you would be happy having one. I say if your heart is telling you to get another dog, then go for it!
If you do, please let us know.

Oh Raydene, I am so sorry, there I was posting about being all excited about my new puppy and his antics without a thought for your recent loss. I had my labs Duke and Jason and it has taken me nearly nine years to be ready for another dog since they went and I wanted another but instead got a collie. I had a great dane called Ben when I was much younger and he was an incredible dog but you must do what you heart tells you to do in deciding. Good luck with the decision. Huggles Ellie :D
