Please don't get me wrong. In day-to-day life we often hear those utterings by people known to us or unknown, in some situations. May be it's for fun or serious. If it's between friends, definitely fun, i think. How will you react if someone calls you like that? How many persons you have called like that and what were their reactions?

The bible actually states that he who says to his brother, "Thou fool" is in danger of hellfire. I'm not exactly sure what is meant by that. Maybe it is tied to where it tells us to make our words soft. I've told my children not to be an idiot or not to act stupid when they got carried away with something. I don't think I would ever use those words to a person who was not a relative.

I think it's never okay to call people things like that but in our society it's okay. You just have to make sure that it doesn't really offend the person that you're directing it towards.

Well, didn't take it wrong :P lol
I won't think of using these words around. Cos I have highly sensitive or totally insensitive people around me, hardly ever people understand. Its good I am able to understand their contexts. I would love to have a friend who would understand me from roots - but well, I would rather discuss that in friendship!
It feels like friends when we use these words, but as its said above, it all depends on context. Its better to call people with the nicknames they have accepted!

All depends on context. If you're kidding around with someone, it's fine. Nobody will take offense. But, if it's meant as an insult, watch out. Nobody likes to feel mentally inadequate. It's one of those things which we can't really change about ourselves. While we can be educated, the raw materials which make people smart are born into us. Thinking quickly can't really be taught. When someone uses these words, they are speaking more to someone's raw talent and not their education. Other words would work.
I've seen fist-fights started for using these words, and I've also seen people enter into a heated dialogue that went somewhere. Using these words on another person in anger is normally wrong.
