I suggest you consult this page:

Some of the lists on here include books which, if read conscientiously, could well substitute for a 4-year college education. If you are really ambitious, you might start with Fadiman's Lifetime Reading Plan. Of course, it does not take a lifetime to read those books, as I finished most of them in high school.
There are also short lists, such as the London Telegraph's Top 100 books, and the 2002 compilation called "The 100 most meaningful books of all time."

Thank you for that list. I am going to check it out. I like to read but right now I am limited to bestsellers and detective novels. My favorite authors are Jeffery Deaver and James Patterson (although I am not liking some of his works lately). I have read some books that are not my type and, while some have disappointed me, I have found some of them to be treasures and am thankful I have read them.

First of all, what do you like reading about? Or, what are your interests and hobbies? Do you prefer fact to fiction or you want to read both?
