My mother eventually realized that we ate so much candy that no one wanted to eat the huge Christmas dinner she had made. So, she would cook the day before, then Christmas Eve we would eat, sit around and talk, eat some more, sing Christmas Carols, eat some more, just look at the Christmas tree lights, and then get ready for Midnight mass. Christmas dinner the next day was a leftovers. Which made it a holiday for everyone.
We also every year made taffy. It never worked right. But, that was part of the tradition. I think we would have been disappointed if it had worked.

Oh, I forgot a really cool, pre-American Christmas holiday we had. We always celebrated St. Nicholas Day. We are not Dutch. However, after a trip to Holland, Michigan, my sister and I had wooden shoes with our name on them. We would leave carrots in them on December 4 and St. Nicholas (Mom) would leave candy in them the next day. Even when I went away to college, Mom would still send me a small bit of candy for St. Nicholas Day. It kinda made the waiting for Christmas Day a tad easier.

OH yes I have heard of this, thank you for reminding me. I was not sure of the date it was done or what exactly it was called, I only heard about it briefly. I think this would be really fun to start with my grandson...he is only 2 but i think he would catch on in no time=)
thanks again for your respons.

My taffy never turns out either..lol
You sound like you have a close, and wonderful family. I especially love the idea that no one cooks on Christmas Day.

My favorite one is baking cookies with my kids on Christmas eve day. We leave cookies and milk for Santa (we have a special set we use every year). We then put carrots outside for the reindeer. Before the kids go to sleep we watch the original How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
I can't wait to hear about other traditions people have.

Mine are singing Christmas carols while baking, making chocolates & fudge and trimming the tree. I love the colored Christmas paper, it brings me joy to wrap gifts that I know someone is going to love! I enjoy carols, but am sick of them by January 1st.

I remember when i was little i use to get present wrapped in the comics page, saved money and i loved it. They do not seem to have that many comic pages in our paper anymore.
