I had a similar experience with a movie not a book. It's based on a short story by Stephen King thought so you could consider it a book if you like. I was rooting for the protagonist and felt really sorry for him right until the last 10 minutes or pages. The first time I saw the ending I was kind of startled since I had absolutely not seen it coming. I thought it was kind of wired and strange. But the more I thought about it the more I appreciated it. Turns out it makes much more sense that way.
