i need a serious, detailed, true response for this - 786...what does this really mean? Before going deeper i need to make something very clear
"I RESPECT ALL RELIGIONS"
..
Well, today me and ma father were talking about the religions and we talked so much about our religions and also about other religions...One was "Islam"...He said many of the muslims(almost all) dont know what "786" really...even though they got some answer, that may not be the perfect..He somewhat explained 786 but he denied to tell the meaning of what the number "7" indicates..he said i am not grown enough(im 17) to those explanations...
he challenged me that i cannot get a right answer(my dad is not a muslim, but he knows about it,he too respects all religions)...
i said i will get it here...

I am a Muslim and I believe that it is just an innovation by the Muslims, which they created to substitute the Arabic supplication taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad(pbuh).I donot like all such Satanic innovations and Taboos in our universal religion.......

Awapak, this discussion has inspired me to learn more about Islam and what this number "786" means.
From what I have read, the number 786 has to do with the numeric values of the letters that make up (forgive me if I mispell this) Basmallah.
Everything I read says that this number is somehow a "miracle", but I havent been able to figure out WHY it is condiered such.
Why is the number 786 considered a miracle??

Mind you these figures are not satanic but their substituting the original Arabic supplication, which was taught by our Holy Prophet(pbuh)to his companions, is not good.I donot use these figures in place of original supplications.I hope you have understood what I mean ??

Its been identified that there are miracles with numbers in Quran. But nowadays some Muslims use 786 as a short form for 'Bismillah al-Rahmani al-Raheem' (In the name of God, most gracious, most merciful).
However based on Islam 786 has nothing to do, Prophets or companions has no advice on such numbering; So it is considered as out of Islam. I don't think saying 786 will give the reward of saying "Bismillah" (If so Sying 786 while start eating would be better, huh? grrr.) or achieving the reward of writing it Instead of Bismillah, but just may use it to identify it's like a "Bismillah..."

I don't consider any importance to 786. However I may recognise it as "Bismi..." when some ignorant Muslims write it.

Im a muslim and this number 786 cant be the reason for someone being a good muslim or not. I think thats foolish. Well 786 means Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim which means In The Name of God The Most Gracious, the most Compassionate. Usually said before doing things for an example b4 we eat we say this too.

hey have you found your answer yet?
i found this explanation pretty clear:
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_786_in_Islam
i saw in some responses that you got confused upon hearing that it does not have any relation with Islam. actually there are many things in all the religions that were not there originally, but later invented by people for their personal/social gain or simply out of ignorance.
P.S. i usually don't care to reply to discussions, but just like you i am also trying to know clearly about Islam (i have a hindu father and a muslim mother), so i tried to help. besides, when i am in a discussion with other muslim friends, sometimes i come across some inflexible people who make the discussion very ugly if i say something wrong. so, i guess if you like to learn and discuss about Islam, it is important for you to clear the confusions!

"786" is the total value of the letters of "Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim". In Arabic there are two methods of arranging letters. One method is the most common method known as the alphabetical method. Here we begin with Alif, ba, ta, tha etc. The other method is known as the Abjad method or ordinal method. In this method each letter has an arithmetic value assigned to it from one to one thousand. The letters are arranged in the following order: Abjad, Hawwaz, Hutti, Kalaman, Sa'fas, Qarshat, Sakhaz, Zazagh. This arrangement was done, most probably in the 3rd century of Hijrah during the 'Abbasid period, following other Semitic languages such as Phoenician, Aramaic, Hebrew, Syriac, Chaldean etc.
If you take the numeric values of all the letters of the Basmalah, according to the Abjad order, the total will be 786. In the Indian subcontinent the Abjad numerals became quite popular. Some people, mostly in India and Pakistan, use 786 as a substitute for Bismillah. They write this number to avoid writing the name of Allah or the Qur'anic ayah on ordinary papers. This tradition is not from the time of the Prophet -peace be upon him- or his Sahabah. It developed much later, perhaps during the later 'Abbasid period. We do not know of any reputable Imams or Jurists who used this number instead of the Bismillah.

First of all, what do you mean by "If you are a true Muslim?" what made you write this? Others won't know or only those are "True" know it?
Actually being a True Muslim is not at all related with knowing what 786 means.
Muslims are usually supposed to, and they do start any work, with the name, taking the name of God. This taking of name is phrased in an arabic sentence "Bismillah Hir Rahman nir Raheem" meaning, "With the name of God, most merciful". This phrase is known to every Muslims (atleast almost), as it is in arabic, they can't use it to write at inappropriate places, eg. they can't use the arabic script, simply because they don't know or a place where using that phrase would cost him sin (also other related), there came use of something which when written, would have the same meaning (as they have decided) but apparently it appears something different for others, also for some it may have some different meaning. So just to reduce the writing of long phrase and as they don't know what actually it means, they could well remember by framing it into a 3 number, which is 786, and this is derived by adding up all the position numbers of the appearing characters and made it into "786".
It evenually has no significance in Islam, just for ease, can be called as assumed, it has been used.

786 has something to do with the numerical arrangements. It has no significance to Islam really but was made up by people in this time i guess. Search it on gooogle, "The meaning of 786 in Islam"

Well you should ask your father what 786 is all about. Islam is not meant to be a religion of supersition. Is it a passage in the quran or something that is meant to be spiritual? Question him.

I think it s an interpretation of names with numberes,as in olden days there were no numberes.but people used the alphabets for numbers.like Chriatians have 666 for saten and 888 For Jesus....likewise for Mohammed it may be 786.

A quick version of what I believe 786 means is this, 7 in Islam is often referred to a perfect symbol of completeness and goodness. 86 is how old Abram was when his son Ishmael was born. Ishmael was the fore father of Muhammad who was in turn the founder of Islam. So it could mean something like the complete goodness of creation. That's just a guess and I'm sorry if I offended anybody.

Salam.im a muslim.
Ok,now just to let you know 786 isnt related with islam in any way. Those who use it have no idea of what they're doing. It may be sinful, because, suppose,a muslim uses the word "God" instead of "Allah".If he has read the Qu'ran, then he should know that Allah has NEVER called himself God.He has called himself Allah. So we shouldnt use numbers or anything to replace anything in the Quran.
Thanks
