Can you live without your pc or laptop?

I found out that it can be darn hard trying to live without my laptop!
My laptop was infected by spyware and other troublesome software that I had no idea of that it found it's way into my system. I never download music, movies or software and that's why I figured I was rather safe. I do have virus scanner software etc., but my laptop freaked out a couple of days ago and hasn't runned well ever since today.
It took me a lot of time but I am happy to say (knock on wood!) that I managed to get the thing working again and a lot of harmless files deleted or quarantained.
It showed me how much I need my laptop for school, contacts with work/internship place and school and also practical things as time tables for the train etc.
It can all be done without internet (accept for certain schoolwork that you need to download and print or mail to your teacher), but we aren't used to it anymore.
Has this ever happened to you? Did you have a hard time adjusting?
Did you miss me?

Let me know if it works out for you, I think it's a great solution who have a bussiness that needs a pc/laptop available 24/7 . Perhaps better pm me once you know, as I won't get a notification if you respond to this response . Happy new years eve!

If your bussiness depends on it you might want to look into a type of insurance that will supply you with a substitute laptop/notebook the very same day if something crashes. I know we have it here in Holland and I am sure other countries will offer a similar service. It won't save your files so backing up your files frequently is still a must, but at least you'll have another laptop/notebook within a few hours .

I can live without my pc or laptop. It is not the end of the world if i dont have it lol. Come to think of it in the past people survived without this stuff so i know i can survived without it. It is not as important as my mobile phone or my beauty products. I can even live a life without those stuff that really matters to me.
As long as there is food in the table and my family is with me that is all that matters to me.

That would be a fine answer if you had to respond to the discussion literarly . If we have to off course we can survive with computers, it just makes certain things like your studies a lot harder. But if we had to we can survive, even if we haven't a table to put our food on .

I need a computer constantly because of my work. I need a laptop since I need to use it both at home and both at work. It helps me to do research, lesson plans and even marking up student's work.

I agree that would make life a lot more difficult. Judging from your response: are you a teacher, Ronaldinu? And if so, what grade do you teach and/or what course? I would love to hear because I took some classes to become a teacher aswell but at the time being I am envolved in another studies. If I decide to get back to teaching I can get my degree in just a year though . Thanks, have a great new years eve!

Yes, when my PC or net goes out of order, things become difficult. It becomes difficult to do certain jobs, which only be done on computer or net. There is substitute of computer and since we are relying more on e-technology, we are becoming slaves of it.

I think that's a good way to put it. Making everything digital allows the net and the pc network to have us rely on it so much that it actually enslaves us.
Very good choice of words, thanks for responding!

Thanks very much for appreciating my response.

LOL, you are right, we might have become to dependant on pc's.
That's why I think it's a good thing to put things in perspective, like with a discussion like this one. We can do so much without our computers aswell, it's just hard because my studies is allmost fully digitalized and I need to go online to get my readers, etc, and my school mail and see if there are teachers calling in sick. This is not to be found anywhere else so if you lack a pc + internet you can't even finish college .

i think that's one of the problems in the world today. As we become more technological, we do get a bit lazier, but we loose sight of how things were done before that technology was around. And when something happens to that technology and it isn't working, everyone goes into a panic because they don't know how else to do what needs to be done. but, as with everything in life, there are pro's and con's, its just a matter of which out weighs which for each individual person, and whether or not we are responsible with the technology we use and don't loose sight of alternate methods of accomplishing the same task without it

For a momet I thought you might be from the Netherlands as well as NL is short for Netherlands on car stickers, etc, but I saw your profile and concluded that the NL in your name does not mean that .
Laptops can provide a lot of fun, and because we are used to them being there we have a harder time entertaining ourselve with other things. Take care!

I agree that a pc or laptop is very versatile and therefor will not easily bore a person. There is just so many different things you can do that there allways is something for you to like. I know about the requirements for school, I have pretty much the same thing as I need to get readers of the intranet, put a portofolio online and keep it up to date, etc. Also a lot of contact is through e-mail, so if I haven't got a pc or laptop communication would be pretty much impossible.

If I had to choose I guess I would have to go for my laptop even though living without a cellphone has become something people aren't used to either.
Good one starting on that one! I would get a lot of trouble in college though without my laptop so if I had an ultimatum and could choose only one I would have to go for my laptop. I understand why someone would choose a cell phone though!

i would find it virtually impossible to live without my pc or laptop as i work online from home so i would not be able to earn a living and take care of my familly.
i do rely on it lots for other things too, such as banking, emails, ebay etc. i have grown very used to having it there when i need it, the convienience is great, if i need to find out something i just switch it on!

You just shared some very valuable information there: "I got used to it".
That's exectly what I mean. We have grown dependant on pc's and internet in particular. Making everything virtual does have it's downsides and I experienced them these few days. When you make an income online, working in pc's or studying them or for general studies they are a must. Take care and thanks for replying!

Thank you so much for responding, Insuline.
I am quite intruiged by your name, would you care to share why you have chosen this specific nickname? I think you make a good point with the office software, lots of people use it for processing files and making homework. I don't know anyone that uses a typingmachine anymore. Editing and deleting letters is so much more easy and faster on a pc. Have a nice day and take care!

I know that I couldn't live without mine. Firstly, I need it for college so that I can research and do my homework on it. Secondly, I need it for income purposes. The income that I get from the internet is very useful to me, and I don't think I could get by without it at the moment.

I can live without everything except water, and my laptop. I have to have it. I'm planning on purchasing an extra laptop this year (for emergencies), and also a solar powered generator next month... I don't need a phone or electricity, but I do need my laptop.
When I'm not at work, or out with my friends, I'm on my laptop.

I find myself wondering that often. The Internet has made life so much more convenient and what we want to know is at the tip of our finger tips. Its a endless run of constant information. I think by nature most people want to learn and the internet feeds of that. Believe it or not though, there are still people especially ones in there 50's' and older that still don't use it so it is possible to survive without it. If I really had to I think I could because I enjoy the outside as much as I do things like the Internet. Would I want to? Probably not.

Frankly speaking,I was also troubled by such problems as virus, spyware etc.A few weeks ealier,my PC failed to work well.During the days without PC,a mordern facility which can give us something useful such as information, making friends via internet,I had become a helpless college student who,I found, had no other way than to enter the library to study. In my opinion,I can`t image my life without PC.In the same time,we should cherish and maintain every subject,of course, inclding indispensable PC in our ordinary life.

Thank you so much for responding. I guess living without a pc is well possible if we really want to make the effort (and aren't forced to do so by our work and studies), but in the end we could also choose another study or workplace if we are to go really black and white on this topic . Off course those things aren't as easy as I make them sound right now.
Thanks for the compliment on how I handled this .

You are not alone here, I have over 3 pages of responses now and pretty much all of us would feel a bit lost without our pc. It has become something of everyday life and we use it so much that we have a hard time adjusting if it's not in our routine.

Just can't think of it, its everything to me, that's why I use pocket pc cell to be always connected to net, if pc is not there, I feel I am wasting my time sitting, boring, have got attached so much with it, I hate viruses, so I prefer using anti-windows. I feel connected with the world, and I think everyone knows me, some attraction to pc, just sit infront of it whenever at home, else carry my pocket pc along everywhere.

I am not entirely sure, at first you say without a problem and then im jk hell yea need it to live? I am not sure about that last sentence, first of all because I can't figure out the spelling and secondly this is either irony or I can't follow you.
I agree that laptops and pc's aren't neccessairy to live, but if I don't have access to them it would personally cause me a lot of trouble with my studies.
I wouldn't die, I would find another way of living, but yet it can be very annoying and I don't want to give up on my studies either. There are also people who need it for their every day work, so living without it is harder for them as they studied that area and make their money from it.
See you around.
