I'm starting a photography club and I am trying to think of activities and assignments that will be fun for everybody. I know that there should be a portrait, a self portrait, and macro at the very least, but I'm looking for more suggestions. I'm hoping to come up with a pretty good list then let everyone pick which assignments they would like to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on assignments, activities, and I guess possibly even "lesson plans"...

Hi, I am also an amatuer photographer, I suggest you start with the Rules of Composition. Since your club is just starting I'm guessing that almost all of your future members are beginners, so I suggest you start with the Rules of Composition. I believe that by focusing your activities to the rules of composition your club members will also learn the rules by action. Here are the Rules of Composition 1. The Rule of Thirds - this means that the frame could be divided into three horizontal lines and three vertical lines. The subject must be placed where the horizontal and vertical lines intersect. By locating your subject at one of the sections you give more emphasis to the subject than placing it into the center. 2. Simplicity - Keep the photo simple. Meaning avoid distracting objects that lead the eye away from the subject. 3. Framing - this means that you could include natural objects to add more meaning to your subject. It could be anything such as doors, windows, trees, chairs. 4. Texture - Textures add a significant interest into the photo. When people see textures in photos, they will imagine how does it feel to touch the object into the picture. 5. Leading Lines - this technique is used to lure the eye of the viewer deeply into the subject. 6. Colors - Colors give life and story on the photograph

Excellent suggestion. I'll try to use this in one of my first meetings. :)

I'm an amateur photographer at best. I like to take as many pictures as I like whenever we go places. I'm always proud of myself when I think I got a good picture of nature and just random things. Anyway, I was skimming through this photography how-to book and one of the assignments the author suggested was to have the students lock themselves in their bathroom for 20-30 minutes and they have to take at least 20 interesting pictures/shots while in there. What do you think? Have you ever come up with this idea? I just thought it was a weird but interesting suggestion.

That is a really great idea... I haven't thought about that specifically, but I have been meaning to take a couple of photos of things I thought were interesting in my bathroom. I'll add this one to the list. Thank you for the tip! :)

Photography is a creative Form of Art. Why not give an assignment like photograph a square or the Color ... or photograph an emotion. this would allow people to bring out their creative side. It would also be very interesting to see how they would critique each other. You are not setting limits on what or how to shoot just that the photo has to have that in it. They could shoot any thing they like. I think it would be difficult, challenging and very interesting. Forces them to look at at something in many different ways.

That element is the main goal that I would like to acheive with each assignment. I don't want to be too specific about stuff, I want to see a variety of what each person can show based on a word or a simple suggestion. I plan on using this suggestion... thank you!

I'm an amateur photographer and recently picked it up again and I have a few suggestions... - "Disgusting/Creepy" an unusual one, featuring things like slugs, spiders? Maybe encouraging people to focus on things not seen as aesthetically pleasing? - "Journey" A picture showing a journal? One I took recently was macro of a slug travelling across grass - Landscape - Doesn't need much explaining right? Then other ideas are trees, sky.. and maybe an assignment to take picture at diffrerent times, sunset, sunrise, midday, candlelight etc? To experiment with different lighting? Anyway, Good Luck with whatever you decide to do! I'm sure it will be great!

A photographer friend of mine takes amazing pictures, they really are art. He took one of a dog doing his business and looking over his shoulder at the camera. I'm not suggesting you should assign animal defecation as a subject, but how about weird or unusual animal expressions? Or how about weather, rain and sun, fog and clouds? You could have a scavenger hunt with the photo subject as the clue to the next goal. If you get them to use their creativity in unusual ways it will be fun.

Go downtown and take pictures. Right there in all the hustle of downtown and maybe the best time would be the night there are loads of opportunities for picture taking. The people alone will wow the photographer. Its incredible what you will see.
