Say I'm thinking of doing php contract work in a (relatively) large city. What would be the average hourly rate? It probably depends on the project, but let's say I'm working on a custom-built CMS. What would be the going hourly rate for that?
Just curious here.

I've seen some jobs going as a work-from-home sort of job that range from a mere $20,000 to a huge $85,000 and then theres bounses on top of that, it all depeds on the project you are doing.

If you have good programming practices and an advanced understanding of building web applications, an hourly rate of $40 is normal.
