Free download manager (FDM) is one of my favourites~ It shortens your download times quite significantly.
AusLogics Disk Defrag is quite good as a freeware~ The vista OS defragmentation can take up to hours. This freeware makes defragment a lot more faster
Advanced WindowsCare V2 Personal is another freeware which i use every week to clear the junks in my laptop. Not bad and quite fast~
Many good (and free) programs can be found in download.com. However before you guys download any please do read the users' reviews. Do not trust the editor's review!!!

Systerac Tools for Vista is a program I tried the other day. It is not freeware to my knowledge, ...I tried so many, I forget.......but the trial allows full use, which many of them don't. It defrags, fixes files ....anyways, I liked it. I don't want to pay for it, ...so I will try the Advanced Windows Care
Thanks for the suggestions for the other software. I tried one defrag that like you said, ....if I had let it go would take hours.

I actually do not play many games. I like them, but i limit myself as to how long I spend on the internet, as I have a number of other interests as well. But occasionally people like yourself have interests that sound like fun and I go and try some new things that I have not done before. Thanks again.

my 2 favorites have got to be GIMP, which is a program similar to PhotoShop.......only difference is it's free.
i use it quite a bit to make banners and components for my blogs.
the other one is Picture and Sound Show which is a program that let's you create you own screensavers.
both of these programs are available at download.com

I love download.com. My computer was running slowly, so I got some programs that cost, ...but have the trial period (the old mind just forgot the name for that); anyways, I used 4 or 5 different programs to fix and clean up my computer. It's much faster now. Thanks for the ideas. walkgal

I once downloaded a vista transformation pack.I was bored with the same old interface and appearance of windows xp. I wanted to try something different. I decided to give my computer a new look. So I downloaded and installed the software. It transformed the appearance like that of vista but still functioned same way as xp. Since my ram wasn't good enough it gradually tend to slow down. So I had to uninstall it. I still keep giving it a different look by downloading new themes. I'm also a game addict and would like download and try latest games before buying it.

I downloaded an Advanced IP scanner. I had a problem a few months ago with people using our Wi-Fi. Instead of putting a WEP key right away, I installed an advanced IP scanner on my laptop to check the traffic and then block the IP's of those who were using our connection. Then I put a WEP key on the router.

megsmartinez,
You are way ahead of the game here, ....and of me. I do learn though every time I download a new software and try it. My computer was slowing down, so I downloaded trial versions of software, ...and it cleaned it, and fixed many things on my computer. Seemed to work too. I'm more careful though than I used to be, as I have
deleted necessary things. I like to back it up to a previous setting if I make a mistake. That usually helps. Karen walkgal

It's always good to back-up before installing, uninstalling and deleting stuff. I've been tinkering around with software since I was young so don't worry about catching up or anything.
