What is 'Big Bang'? Anyone know about it?

So much is being talked about these days as European Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN) is conducting the largest experiment ever in human history. Lots of money has been spent. And the world is watching this. some even say that the world will doom once they start the experiment. I don't have any idea. Can anyone explain in simple terms what actually is happening?
