Do you write for competitions? If you do check out Writers Digest web site. They have a short story competition that ends December first. The competition rules etc are listed and the prizes are great. Just letting you know that it's a very good and worthy competition.

Erm, I don't know if you know this, but Writer's Digest reputation in the industry is quite bad, to put it mildly. I wouldn't say it's a "very good and worthy competition", not by a long shot.

Why do you say that? I have used their books for market places and have sold articles to many magazines and much of my poetry too!

http://leegoldberg.typepad.com/a_writers_life/2008/01/writers-digest.html I find Lee Goldberg's stance against POD and vanity publishers a bit strong, but the comments in that article should reveal a lot. http://www.gather.com/ViewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977408288&grpId=3659174697240784&nav=Groupspace *grumbles about not being able to copy and paste links* :P The thing about Writer's Digest is that it's not very rigourous when it comes to screening publishers and sponsers.

Urk, think I missed out something for the second link, since it appears to be not working. Unless someone is interested, I'll just leave it like that, since I'll probably mess up again if I try to type out the very long URL

I don't write for competitions. My ability to write and my imagination don't always jive..lol I get stuck trying to think of a good topic to write about and the more I strain my brain, the less the brain can work at full capacity! I'm always trying to think of fun and different things to do with my life and don't think they are necessarily appealing to readers should I decide to write about these crazy topics. Here's an example: we were stuck in traffic last night. There was a clean, new bridge which was recently built. I thought, how fun to set up a card table, take a picnic lunch or dinner, bring chairs and a cooler and have a picnic under the bridge. This would surely bring the news people..lol If I mentioned this to my husband, he may have taken me right to the hospital and had me admitted. But this is how my mind works, especially if I am bored with life. Just something to spice up my daily routine and do something different. Have also thought about buying a metal detector and roaming through the parks looking for money. Something different than the "norm." I have written 18 articles for Hubpages but don't find them to be interesting or exciting. I did do some research on the softball article I wrote but the other articles were no brainers.

That sounds like a good start to a story! I would love to see you on a bridge having a picnic!

Actually it's under a bridge. The news media may love it! Then again we could be locked up for trespassing....lol

Hi Jill. I don't know if it's considered a competition, but I do write occasionally for Helium's publishers and then the publisher selects which article it wants to purchase for publication on a website or in a magazine. I haven't checked out Writers' Digest website in quite some time. I don't think I knew they have a writing contest there. Thanks for telling us about this. Maybe I'll check it out. Do you write for their competitions?

Sometimes I do.....but I've been a little busy lately. I see that people write for Helium or squidoo and associated content..I haven't actually tried too much there. I guess I am used to writing for magazines.

Hey Jill. That is cool that you've written for magazines. I've got over 100 articles on Helium and over 30 on Associated Content. I'm a member of Squidoo but never did anything on there. One of those lens would take me about 3 years to finish! They look incredibly difficult. I'm also a member of Demand Studios but haven't ever written for them. I've got 12-15 articles on Constant Content and have sold some there. I've heard about that short story competition at that one writers' forum, I forget the name of it. I'm not too good at writing fiction but I have toyed with it. Maybe I'll check this Writers' Digest thing out also. Take care and keep writing. I know how busy life gets.

Answer to your question in one word is no. Because usually there are over 10000 people who take part in competitions it is very hard to win.
