Can any one here say why tears come out of our eyes when we cut onions???

It is not the strong odor of the onion that makes us cry, but the gas that the onion releases when we sever this member of the lily family.

Hmmmmm, You must be knowing more correctly, as you are cooking in your kitchen. Any way u told it be of lily family, how cud you know that? are you a botany student??? Thnx for your response!!!

Cooking an onion produces a very strong aroma that most people enjoy ,but cutting up an onion stings your eyes and makes you tear up uncontrollably.When you slice through an onion ,you break open a number of onion cells;some of these cells have enzymes inside of them and when they are sliced open ,the enzymes escape.The enzymes then descompose some of the other substances that have escaped from sliced cells.The volatile gas reaches your eyes and reacts with the water that keeps them moist. ;)
