have you ever had to have your pet "euthanized" or "put down"?

i have, and it was a very hard decision. our labrador retriever lilo contracted a severe case of mange. for around 2-3 years we repeatedly had her treated for it, and in the process even changed vets, but it would still come back again and again. her mange was so severe that her hair fell out and at night we could her her whimpering and scratching herself. it even came to a point that she would scrape herself against objects to stop the itch. after maybe more than a year and a half, my mom started thinking about putting lilo down, but i couldn't do it, and so we switched vets and kept up the treatment. but still the mange wouldn't go away and our poor dog was already suffering badly. in the end, my mom consulted with the vet and decided that it would be best to put lilo down and end her suffering. i wasn't home when they did it, but i remember calling home many times if it was over. it was a difficult ordeal not only for our dog, but also for our family because we were always worrying about her. i still feel sad when i think about how she had to be put down, but at the same time i am relieved that she is no longer has to suffer.

It's a very hard decision to make. When I was 18, our dog was ill. My mum asked me to take her to the vet as she was working. I did so, and when the vet saw her, she wouldn't let me leave with her, saying that she was in a lot of pain and really should be put down. It was so hard, the vet wanted to do it there and then. I stayed and watched and petted her as she went. Then I had to go back home and when my mum got home, I had to break the news to her. We were all absolutely devastated, but I think what made it worse was that no-one else was able to say goodbye. That was over 20 years ago, and writing it now, brings it all back and I've got tears in my eyes - again. My thoughts are with you.

In March 2006 I had to put my dog Venus down, she would have been 18 in July so I guess she had a good innings. After always being a very actice and seemingly indestructable mutt all her life it was very distressing to see her spiralling downhill for the last year or so of her life. Dementia seemed to be setting in as she was increasing;y doing odd things (stalking nothing etc) but then I think she might have had a stroke or something. I found her outside lying on the ground and she couldn't get up. When I got her back on her feet she needed to lean against the fence or wall to walk or she would always fall over to one side. I took her to the vet and even though I knew I was doing the right thing I was hit with guilt trips thinking that I betrayed her.I left the room before the vet did it, in hindsight perhaps I shouldn't have as I hope she dosen't think I deserted her, but at the time it was just too painful and distressing. I hope there is a big kennel up there and one day I'll get to throw her ball for her once again.

thanks for the response! i think your dog Venus has lived to a ripe old age. sometimes i still feel kind of guilty, especially since they said that she sort of knew that she was going to be put down :( i was talking to my mom about it the other day and she said that we had her put down because we love her and so that she wouldn't have to suffer any more than she already has. i feel bad about not being there too, but i don't know if i would have been able to take it.

I personally have not had to but I know a few of my grandmas dogs had to be one of them had gone blind and she lost her hearning and then she got where she could not walk anymore so it was just better for her. My neighbors had their dog put down last year he had arthiris so bad he could not even go outside anymore plus he could not hear either. My kitties are only 8 months old right now so I hope I don't have to worry about this for a long long time.
