Stopping scratching?

I have just got a rescue cat, he's two. My problem is he has a scab on the centre of his back and he keeps scratching it so it bleeds. Anyone got any idea how to keep him from scratching it, or does it even matter? Will it still heal eventually anyway? Thanks

The first thing to do is to find out why he's scratching that place. I would recommend a vet trip to check him out. He can get an infection if he's making that spot bleed. In the meanwhile, you can put bitter apple or bitter lemon on the spot. He won't like the taste and may stop scratching. He could have fleas; he could have allergies. What does he eat? I would try him on a canned food with only one ingredient for a month to see if that makes him scratch less. Good luck and thanks for rescuing him.

I think it was from an accident. He also has a big scar down his side, but we don't know exactly what happened, nor do any of the vets in the area.

my late shihtzus used to scratch a lot because they had flea problems. i gave them lots of baths, and put clothes on them to cover their body(infant clothes or pet clothes), and sometimes i put antibiotic cream on the scab before i put clothes on the to cover it up. but then i had to take their clothes off when they needed to go out to pee. so, animals are work.

One possibility would be to request a cone from your vet. I know it seems cruel but it would keep your cat from scrating the spot giving it a chance to heal. I have a friend who has a dog. He was taken to the groomer and got scratched. She put neosporin ointment on it and seemed to help. He also had to wear a cone for awhile because he wouldn't leave it alone. Hope this helps.

I guess its flees or a itchy sore that he just cant stop itching. We had a similar pet problem like that before and A vet once told dad to apply a little disel fuel and rub it on the sore area of the pet. It may stop him from itching for a while but the sore should dry up in a day or 2. We tryed it on our cat and it worked fine even our dog. Or if you do have aloe vera plant puts some aloe vera on the sore but it won't dry up as quick as the disel fuel. Which ever you prefer to try but i'd go with the disel. it works fine! but its up to you if you want to or not.... Cheers
