I have done lasik operation. It safe and after two weeks he should regain his eyesight. It does not involve pain. A bit of discomfort yes. Don't worry about it. The nurse should explain to your brother what he has to go through before deciding whether to do the operation or not.

ive never even considered it personally. a bit freaked out about lasering my eyeballs you know? lol.
however i still wouldnt consider it. i know 2 ppl that had lost most of their sight..enough to be considered legally blind at least. they got the surgery done..and everything was great for a couple of months..they could see really well and everything healed great..then they suddenly started to lose their sight again...really fast. now BOTH of them are blind, one can still see some what..but LESS than what he had BEFORE the surgery. the other one is completly blind. no sight at all anymore. she is hard to talk to, it traumatized her pretty bad.
like any surgery, there are ups and downs, good and bad, and risk factors to take into consideration. i dont know what the 2 horror stories i know of started with, rather i dont know what they cause of they loss of eyesight was in the beginning..but i know it was not something they had from birth. so that might make a big big difference.
the doctor SHOULD tell the family ALL the risks.

there was one of our customers where I used to work in my old job and he lost his sight in one eye completely and near loss on the other eye through this laser surgery.
Personally I would rather wear glasses than laser my eyes. I also know that many people still have to wear glasses at night even after the laser eye surgery especially if they are driving

I think lasik operation has its pros and cons too.If the laser hits the defective cells very correctly then the operation can be termed as a success otherwise if it hits the correct cells then the case could just be reverse.
If he is feeling uncomfortable using spectacles, then i advice him to go in for contact lenses as these are harmless, easy to use and quite cheap.
He is just 18 years of age and it should also be seen if his eyesight is stable for the past one year before going in for the operation.
