Because our god is popular culture. We tell people to be themselves and yet we are all ending up looking like everyone else (fashion, plastic surgery, etc.)Everything is all about being acceptable to other people and their idea of who we should be. It's sad really. We need to take that power back from them. That's probably a whole other discussion!

because they convince themselves that the false images they see in the media are the "ideal" way to be. True beauty is in who you are not what your outside looks like.
Most images in the media are airbrushed and computer edited so it is really a truly false ideal anyway.
it is tragic really that people find their looks so important when there are so many other things that are much more important.

I know that people have all this plastic surgery (especially those in the public eye) because they don't want to look as if they're aging. If you're an actor or an actress, then this desire may come from the fear that if you look older then you might not get so much work; and maybe it's true, but it makes it a very sad world that we live in! But this trend is fast spreading to ordinary folk like you and I, and it's not good.
Personally I hate the way that people look after plastic surgery. Most people who go under the knife are secretive about having had it done, and are under the illusion that no-one will notice. But to me, it looks obvious, unnatural and in most cases really unattractive. Who wants to see a sixty year old with a thirty year old face (and maybe the body to match)? It's just spooky and it creeps me out.
After surgery these people tend to look like their face has been pulled in a way that a face would never really grow without surgical intervention! And the post-surgery look tends to make them look much less interesting. Firstly because after all the tugging they may not actually be able to make interesting and varied expressions, lol! But also, because people try to attain the conventional look of "so-called" perfection, with a straight, even nose (not too long) of a certain width, perfect cheek bones, lifted eye lids, hairline in just the right place, no sagging skin, wrinkles or crows feet; - and the list goes on... and so everyone ends up looking the same!!! It's getting so boring, and people are losing their face's natural character.
You can tell people who haven't had surgery by the fact that their face is still interesting. I despair at this trend, and hope it somehow reverses and people realise that it's ok to look your age, and somewhat disturbing to try to stop time and kid yourself that you're looking good!
Me, I'm just going to grow old gracefully - or disgracefully!

Thanks for best response!
And yes, I forgot to even mention the lips. We had some stars here in the UK who went a bit over the top with the silicone, and they ended up looking really scary.
I wish people would just learn to love themselves!!

Because society has taught us to conform, conform, conform. We are taught as young children that you must be slim and fit .....slim? stick thin is more like it, Blond, blue eyed, little Barbie and Ken types. I have seen so many shows about people being addicted to plastic surgery. They want to improve themselves. Well, they have "improved" themselves to the point where they probably looked better before they started all this nonsense. I don't get that kind of thinking. Why do I have to starve myself, make myself sick, do permanent damage to my body just to look like someone in a magazine? No, thank you anyway.
I agree with one of the other posts. We need to stand up and take back being comfortable with the way we are. While this is starting to happen, we still have a long way to go before young girls stop dying because they were trying to be what someone else considers perfect.

thats very true. imagine if people actually did en masse start to ignore media images - they would never sell us any clothes, shoes, make up anymore!
truth is image sells - we are just currently using the wrong ones.
