What will you do if you lose your important files in your computer?

I can understand this feeling is so terrible. In fact in the past I depended on a very big hard disk to store my son's photos and videos and other files. One day this hard disk suddenly had an unknown problem and all the data were gone.
I tried so hard and fortunately finally thanks for a software called Easyrecovery, it did save all of my files and I was just so happy If I couldn't fix it by myself, perhaps I had to get it fixed by some professional computer staff and that charge would be so high
From this lesson, I learned to backup all of these important files. And this is why I keep burning DVDs to store them.

Good news that you could save such precious photos!
I made the mistake of having my daughter's baby photos
on our computer. I did not have a printer or bother to have
them printed out.
The computer crashed about three months later.
And I lost so many of her photos.
Lucky for us, I had also used our video camera
to capture film of her as a baby, so all was not lost.
And you would think that I had learned my lesson, but the
same thing has happened to me three times.
Last time my computer crashed, it took fifty photos with it.
Lucky me, I had already uploaded most of the photos
to the Internet, so I was able to recover them.
Now I back up everything to DVD, too!
It's the only safe thing to do.
Thanks for the fun topic.
Always nice to talk to you online.

2 weeks ago I lost all my data from my laptop. My hard disk crashed. I had very important stuffs in that. My own composed songs, my mix song mixes which i used to play at club. Everything is lost. I went to the professionals as well, and they said the partition is lost coz just before the hard disk crashed i tried to re-installed windows xp. So now evrything is gone and i still cant get out of it that i lost evrything... but life has to go on and i am making my mixes again. As for my own composed songs, i lost them totally.. noway to get them back in raw form.
I now use an external usb hard drive of 750 gb to store every thing. Cant take another hard disk crash by any chance

Hi! I recently got a Macbook and it has a included application called "TIME MACHINE". It is a software than can automatically make back-up of your files, even the entire content of your laptop. I have not used it yet as I still have to buy a new external drive.
For the PC, I do manual back-ups wherein I choose which files to copy.
Also my HP desktop PC has a recovery disk in one of its partition. But this is only the back-up of the original factory system files (and does not include personal files and other additional software you installed). The recovery disk also need to be burned to DVD in case the hard drive fails.

I used to back up all my my document and music files on Cds, but that meant two or three every month and then I backed them on DVds, the same problem even though I just needed one. And of course they were in the same house. I also backed them up on the Yahoo Briefcase but that meant I could only upload so many before having to pay for that. I then discovered flash drives. I have a 4 gig and an 8 gig one, and I backup on them.
I can also carry them with me, but I do need a larger one because the 8 gig is not enough, not for the whole computer. So I do not intend to lose any of my files.

I plan to buy those mobile USB hard drives now in the market. Small enough to put in a case and has huge capacity ranging from 80gb to 100gb maybe more. That may very well solve my backup problems one day. Technology today is also coming up with bigger flashdrive capacities. Give it a few months to a year. I read somewhere of a company developing high capacity flashdrives. 100gb or more flashdrive would be awesome. Let's see when it hits the market.

Well, I too face the problem from time to time.
Other than to burn DVDs, I also have a spare hard disk for the spare hard disk.
The extra extra important files goes into this secondary hard disk.
Other than that, I really do not know what other way there is to recover data that is lost in a failed hard disk.
If it is a disk sector problem, we can still recover some of it.
It is when the disk head spoils, that is where it is good as gone. Unless you are able to fork out with the exorbitant fees to get a clean room and a specialist to salvage your disk via cannibalism.

Well, if that is the case, then it would be good to invest in more drums of the DVD.
Problem with DVD is this, if you do not label or store them properly, it will also be a pain to search through them for the specific file you want.
With a big HDD, you can easily do a search like you would any drive on your computer.

If I have to lose my important files in my computer, I would totally freak out. I had it happened to me when I had an old computer which kept rebooting itself. I normally keep all my files on floppy diskettes, zip diskettes, CD-ROMs, and jump drives. Since I have a new computer which only use DVD and CD-ROMs, it is hard for me to use my floppy diskettes, unless I have to buy the portable floppy disk drive from office supply stores like Office Max and Office Depot, or at the electronic section of Wal-Mart.

I will not anymore because I back up everything. All I have to do is call someone to fix my computer and then I am fine.

Great, thing that you managed to recover the files..
Is the software a free version, I mean is it available free on the net? Or we have to pay for it. I have come across many softwares like Recuva, filerecovery, etc but these things extract money from us.
If the software is available on the net for free to download, kindly give me the link.
Take care friend, and How is your health now? Are you back to normal friend!

It seems that I used Filerecovery before, but it didn't work so well in my opinion. After a while I will give you a link to download Easyrecovery. It's a must in case any accidents
The doctor said I need about 3-6 months to be normal. You know after the surgery, the skin, nerve etc. needs some time to recover.

that's what im figuring out right now. there are file hosting website available but they only allow 100mb per file.
as much as i want to burn it in a dvd, for sure when im at saudi airport they will confiscate it.
i don't know why it is still considered as piracy when you burn files in a cd or dvd.
im actually curious why cd/dvd writers were made if it is considered as piracy.
maybe i'll just buy a flash disk to put all my files...

I think I'll shoot myself. Lol. Most of my files are years of work. And I don't earn enough to find a way to back up my files. Ive been there done that thing. I lost all my files at the office. I was crushed. Luckily I didnt lose all, I made a backup of all my files each month. I just lost about a month's work. But that's a month's work on my web designs and graphics. I almost jumped out the window. Luckily, we managed to restore my failing hard drive in a week of tweak and trouble shooting. We were able to restore 30% of all the lost month's files. At least, it narrowed it down a bit. Cheers!

Why do you use dvd's when you can use a "flash/memory drive" which is portable, can't get scratched like a dvd, you can easily add and remove files, music and photos and it is password protected so no one has access to see your files. I have one for all my computer files and certain programs and another one for my music and photos.

Thankfully I have never experienced loss of data. I never carried out backups either until recently. I then took a course on Computer Maintenance and now I do everything to my own pc. I carry out regular backups every Friday and I scan my system every Saturday, the computer is on for half a day as the scans take over an hour and a half! Anyway, not many people that have computers would carry out regular maintenance and backups so it's a good thing when you have this knowledge as you can help them and give them some sound advice. I've lost a lot of files over the years. Some I've recovered but most I wasn't able to salvage. I had software long ago that's something like Easyrecovery but I forgot what is was called. If I can't fix it, I can go to a data recovery specialist but their rates are really high! So like you, I've learned my lesson and I backup all my files on DVDs.

Well some moths ago someone stole my laptop..
Nothing like that had happened to me before.. so i guess i didn't think of backing up my files from time to time. And well.. It was a week before i had to present my Tesis in college so i could graduate and i lost every bit of info i had there, plus all of my pictures, drawings and other stuffs.
I guess some people (including me) tend to rely to much on computers. But i definitly learned my lesson and i'm always backing up my files now.
Luckily i was able to finish my work and it's ok now :).. But yes.. it is a horrible feeling.
Sorry for the long post and Have a nice day ^^
