What's Your Problem Spelling Word?

I consider myself a very good speller, better than average, in fact, so I wonder why it is that there is this one word that plagues me because I can never get it right. I always hate it when I need to use the word(like in a response today), because I either have to stop and look it up or just settle for leaving it misspelled. You would think that after all this time I would apply myself and simply learn how to spell it correctly, but, no, I have not done that. Do you have a word that gives you this same kind of trouble time after time? My word is "assassin."

I used to have a problem with appreciate, and actually I still do..If I had to write it instead of type it or type it slowly, forget it..(I guess I just memorized which key to touch to spell it rather than really spelling it huh.??.)

It doesn't really matter how you get it right, carmelanirel. The end result is what's important.

Oh I don't know about that World..Did you see my post on handwriting? I don't think I used the word, "appreciate" in that letter, if I did, I typed it out first..

One word that always bugs me is practice, my tutor was forever telling me that it is spelt with an s not a c, but I couldn't get out of the habit of spelling it practiCe because to me that is right, I do know that you can spell it both ways but I could never get my head around the rule and when you use practice or practise! Weird how the s spelling has a red line under it and yet the once I always use doesn't and yet my tutor was always crossing the c out and putting s instead! I also have trouble in spelling weapon I was forever spelling it weopen, I was always getting the vowels in the wrong place. it's a funny word and when you look at it, it still looks wrongly spelt!

I used to read so many English novels, wolfie, that I would often become confused since some words are spelled almost the same -except for one letter.

I too have a word that plaques me. It is vaccuum. I can never seem to get it right without looking it up or asking someone. I can not figure why it has to have 2 double letters right next to each other and that is only if I have not mispelled it again! Kat

Hi Kat, It is correctly spelled vacuum. Sorry. I do wish I had some magic way to tell people to remember how to spell words. I have always been lucky in that I am an excellent speller. That being said, there are one or two words that I still have trouble remembering how to spell. That is when I just go to good old dictionary.com.

I see that your spelling was corrected, Kat. i wouldn't feel too badly because I think everyone has at least one troublesome word.

Almost every word I spell is a trouble word. I guess I rely to heavily on spell check that my brain has learned to relax and take it easy lol. I must say that the word that I have the most trouble with, which is very odd since I type it a lot, is referral or refer... for some reason the double r's never ends up on the right one in the right tense lol. Oh well I suppose I will never be smarter than a 5th grader... shucks!

Maybe it's just because I attended school at a time when we didn't have all of the new-fangled methods, wickikitty, so you had to learn everything by rote.

For some stupid reason i always mix up the word Rhinoceros. I forget where to put the h. Whether after R or after n. So its the first time that i spelt rhinoceros as rinhoceros.

I seem to never spell "friend" or "their" right. I'm always backspacing on those and sometimes I still don't get them right. I was always taught "I before E except after C" but somehow the word "thier" never looks right spelled either way. So which is it??? It drives me crazy.

As with most everything in life, Wyldrose, there are exceptions to that rule. The correct spelling is their. I also used to struggle with receive.

I have a few of those words that I have to deal with on a regualar basis. I was tope speller in a bunch of my classes. My word is : in it's misspelled state apolojize. It is spelled apologize, but I always spell it wrong. I have no idea why but I always go back and "apologize" for my mistake. I get words like to, too and two mixed up also. I started replacing those words to say what I mean instead of going back and using the correct one.

The study of words is very interesting, peedielyn, and many people can't explain why they have trouble with one or two common words when they are excellent spellers otherwise.

hi there worldwise1! i myself too have this world that i always think im spelling it the wrong way. my word will be "transferred" because sometimes when i do my nurses notes post the operation i would always check on someone elses chart to see if i have spelled it the right way. there are times that i will see other charts spell this word this way "transfered". haha! it confuses me always if does it contain a single or double r. happy posting and happy mylotting!

I always seem to have trouble with the words that have double letters in them. I usually get them but from time to time i'll question myself over and over and i'll end up getting wrong when it was the correct spelling was the initial one. It's wierd that i'm so forgetful from one minute to the next but I can usually spell any word right off the top of my head! :)

The main problem with spelling double consonant words, moondrop, usually happens when you are changing the tense.

I know I am good at spelling, though sometimes there's some kind of trouble time after time. The word assassin, no problem with spelling, maybe in pronunciation. It is funny that I have a hard time telling that word.

"desert" vs "dessert" My sister is a really good speller and when she got tired of how often I ask her which spelling I was looking for she made sure I remember. She told me that think of "sansrival" and "sylvannas" and remember that "dessert" (pertaining to food) always has 2 s's.

There are two words that always stump me. One is dessert or desert. I seem to get them all mixed up! The other is effect and affect. I've always been a good speller and even our kids ask me once in awhile how to spell something if they are in a bind. I have edited their resumes when needed. The English language is so difficult to learn, according to articles I've read.
