As many of you know by now,I am a muslim. Now you may wonder what Shariah is.Shariah is the Islamic law. This law is from the Quran and where I live,Saudi Arabia,we follow this law.The punishments are severe, although the crime rate is the LOWEST here! The punishments for robbery is to chop off the hands of the robber. The punishment for killing someone is death. The punishment for adultery is death. and there are much more laws that if you break you get punished! Share any laws your religion might have :) and comment on the Shariah law if you want.

As far as I know Shariah also requires these punishments to be handed out in public. I think these laws if they act as a deterrant then they are real good. But given the scenario these days, they are most likely misused by people in power to use against their opponents and that is why most countries have reduced the punishments for these crimes. Coming to Hinduism, the punishments are usually much lower and they are usually guidelines on what a person can do to correct it. But, if he does not do that then there are some punishments which are mentioned in Garuda puranam which are almost as severe as some of the ones that you mentioned. Some of these include putting a person alive in boiling oil for mass murder etc. Cheers! Ram

That's good. Unfortunately, when people start to misuse these powers, it is not very evident till they do it at a very massive scale... Cheers! Ram

Yes, all of these are handed out in public to let them know if it actually happens. And so far I havent heard any muslim abusing his powers to turn around Shariah.

Pretty amazing laws mentioned there! Dont you think its a bit too harsh? I mean we are human and sometimes we deserve a second chance right? I'm hindu and I don't think there are any laws as such. Whats the main aim of a punishment? To teach that person a lesson, so that he can learn from it and help him differentiate better between good and bad. What will he learn if his cant find his head?

A person isnt punished until he breaks a law, so he has all the chances till he breaks one. Who will want to steal anything if he knows his hands will be chopped off?

hmmm... You're right. But I still feel religion should make a man not want to steal because he has been taught good things rather than making him not stealing due to fear of punishment. A person who has no opportunity to be bad and so hasn't done anything evil cant be called good. A person who has an opportunity to be bad and yet chooses to be good is the true person. Dont you think?

I'm pagan, I don't really have many religious laws. My rules are pretty much my own making, and I guess you could say they're more like a "code" -- like some cowboys, knights, and various protector-type people used to have back in the day. It's not very common in the country where I live, and there's no real punishments if I break my own rules. I've just made this code after some lessons learned in life, so that I can prevent myself from making too many stupid mistakes.
