You DON'T, at least my father does not anymore that is. One day the younger cat was after a fly that was on the front of the TV. The TV is a 36" and is on its own TV stand. The cat hit the front of the TV hard. My father rolls up a newspaper and yells at the young cat. The old cat comes bolting out of who knows where are scratches both of my fathers arms all up! He never hit the cat with the paper and would never hit the cat with the paper. The old cat has never done anything like that before nor since. The funny thing is those two cats will attack each other, yet the older one protected the younger one???

That's sooo sweet of the older to come to the protection of the younger. Sorry your Dad's arms had to pay the piper on that one.

haha
my cats permit me to discipline them.
by that i mean, they do it right in front of me !
like they are taunting me.
a sharp NO !
and a spray of water works.
actually, some times i only have to pretend i am
squirting water and just make the noise and it works.

I use a water-sprayer and loud noises (clap your hands, etc.). I recently heard of something called a rattle can. You put a few pennies in an empty pop can and tape the lid shut. Shake and voila! instant noise maker. I'm going to try it the next time my cats be bad.

A nice stern talking to & or a squirt w/ the water bottle a few times especially if I see them doing what they weren't supposed to again.
If it's in the middle of the night I just pick #2 up and put her on the floor and tell her to scoot. She'll climb back up and start pestering me all over again, then a I just kinda shake her off of me and ignore her she'll get it eventually. Hopefully I'm not awake by that point.
