A friend told me the other day that her boyfriend of three years who's based abroad sprang a surprise on her when he told her that he's been accepted in the army and that he'll be going home for a vacation before he finally go on active duty in Afghanistan. My friend is on a frenzy with this sudden turn of events in their relationship. It seems that her boyfriend has made up his mind without telling her before he decided. She tried to dissuade him from his plans but the guy sounded intent on getting on with it. They have been keeping a long-distance relationship for two years now, and she's worried that the Afghanistan adventure will put a strain on their relationship. How about you friends? How would you feel if you were in her place? What do you think would be the best thing for her to do? Your thoughts are welcome. Btw, her boyfriend will be getting home from abroad in 2 weeks time.

Well, as much as she doesn't like it, she has to take into mind, that it sounds like this is something he has always wanted to do. (I get this from your choice of words 'finally going on active duty in afghanistan) I guess your friend has two choices, one would be to beg her man to stay despite what he wants, which could cause a fight, between the two maybe even cause a break up, which in turn would Not be very good for him where he is going. I have heard many soldiers, including very old war vets. Say that while in active war the only thing that kept them going was knowing something was waiting for them back home. Which is her second Option, to bite her tongue and be his support system, his back bone in this very thing. As much as she herself disagrees with it. Though it seems the two have alot to talk about and alot of things to work out before his departure. I hope everything goes well for both.

My friend is really looking forward to a very long talk about this with her boyfriend. She can't help getting worried though esp. when she hears or reads something about incidents involving soldiers in Afghanistan. Thanks indiandevil!
