How to bid on freelancer jobs

I'm new to the freelancer thing. In fact I'm pretty new to working online in general. I joined freelancers.com and it asks you to bid on each job, but I have NO IDEA how much I should bid on some of these jobs. I'm afraid of bidding too high and not getting the job, or bidding too low and getting swamped with some assignment that takes and month and only pays $20. For example, one of the jobs listed recently was for someone to make 500 Myspace accounts. I know I can make 500 Myspace accounts, but they each have to have a valid email address and a bio as well. That's friggin time consuming! So, should I bid more because it's so time consuming, or less because it's simple?

I have never used freelancers.com, instead I use www.rentacoder.com. With that said, it is the same; a bidding site. What is nice about these sites is that you can do whatever you want. I recommend experimenting first. Some people are cautious of working with someone who is new to a bidding site, like someone who does not have established feedback. So, in that aspect you could bid low to help generate feedback, but I do agree that you need to be careful. Like you said, you don't want to lose money by taking a time consuming project. If you do decide to bid low because you want to get started on the website or if you want to make money quick, that is fine (as it is your choice) but make sure you get what you are worth later on. On some of the bidding websites, you will find a lot of low paying jobs, but you will find quality projects listed in between too, so just make sure you bid what you believe you are worth.
