How overweight people are looked at..

Being overweight myself, it dawned on me the other day, how odd it is, that when an overweight person is exercising, walking, whatever, people look at us and think, "well good for them, they're trying to lose weight..", but if you take that very same person a couple of hours later, eating something in a restuarant, people will look at us and say, "why is that overweight person eating? They should be dieting and not eating so they can lose weight..." I just think it's very sad the way American society deals with overweight people. When did all this start, anyway? Especially among white folks. Why are we so obsessed with being skinny?

It's all about media portrayal. Just like anything else the media influences the way that people think. Like the self fulfilling prophecy if you say it about yourself enough then eventually you will start to believe it. It's all a mindset. The media sets out certain looks as what women are supposed to look like skinny, perfect hair, perfect body, unblimished face. Everything goes back to how they think that we should look and the messages we get from that. It started a long time ago possibly before, but is most commonly linked with Hitler. Hitler portrayed people who are Jewish as money hungry people with big noses, and manipulative, and how he did that was by putting posters up everywhere and by manipulating people into thinking that the religion was a race, and therefore, causing many different views of hatred towards these individuals. He started helping economy (as media does), however, he even made childrens storybooks that were about the genocide of the Jewish religion which were the Jews as he called them. Posters, and books, and articles, and many media in that day to do the job of the portrayal. It goes back a while. Wonderful discussion.

To me it depends on what the person is eating. If an overweight person is at Golden Corral and has been up to the buffet 3 or 4 times chowing down on fatting/fried foods and sweets with no balance of salad or veggies then I'm thinking that's why the person got big in the first place & should be dieting.

First, coming from someone who has been on both sides of that coin you mention, I was 5'3" and pushing (maybe over) 300lbs, I stopped getting on the scales at 290. I really don't think it's about being skinny, it's about being healthy. I lost 150 lbs in a year and have kept it off for 3 years now. And having been there, we all know, if we're being honest, that being overweight is not healthy. It's not good for the knees, ankles, joints. It's not good for anyone who might be or is diabetic. It's not good on the circulatory system. I really don't thinks it's an obessession with being skinny as it is to be healthy. And I for one plan on staying at my lower weight, if not a tad lower. My loosing the weight had absolutely nothing to do with fashion, what my family thought, what my friends thought, it was all for me.

You know being over weight is bad because of health reson and me my self is trying to lose the weight I put on from my kids and I found out that you can eat what ever you want but to lose weight you must burn off more then what you ate. If you just watch how much you eat you can have what every you want.
