What are some cheap activities or crafts for kids?

Well my sisters birthday is coming up in about a week or two. We are going to do a birthday party for her and invite our family and a couple of her friends that live close by. Last year we didn't do much other than just buy her a couple gifts. So this year we really wanted to do something big or at least bigger than just buy her some gifts. My mom keeps asking me what we could do with the kids. We don't want to take them anywhere, just activities or crafts that we can do at home or right outside. I think she has already planned to do pin the tail on the donkey. We thought about doing face paint but we don't think we can do the paint good enough. She was talking about doing an egg toss, but I think she decided no on that, I am not sure. She is on the phone right now so I can't ask her. Anyways I was wondering if anyone knew of any cheap activities for kids? By the way she is turning 8 and all of the kids are around that age. Or at least all of the kids that will participate. I tried to think of some things to do, but I just can't think of anything. Have any ideas?

Haha, i remember when i was younger i use to go to these parties.. It would be super fun! Anyways you could try having " musical chairs " at your party. Set up around 10 chairs and then they walk around the chairs untill someone stops the music then you gotta quickly sit down and whoevers left out has to sit out, and it keeps going untill theres one person left. You could also have a pinate at your party. Fill it up with lots of candy!! Kinds like that!

I didn't even think about musical chairs, it's a classic! I am surprised at all of the things I didn't think about and they are games that we have all played. I just wasn't thinking. Thanks for all of your ideas.

Musical chairs was the first thing I thought of and I was going to say to get a pinata too lol. Good thing I read through the first few posts. It would be cool if you had little prizes for the kids that win the games (that's totally up to you though because it would mean buying extra stuff). My cousin also had a party when we were younger where we played the limbo lol and people were eliminated when they touched the stick. Everyone would go trough when the stick was at the highest level and after everyone went through they lowered it a little and everyone (who wasn't eliminated yet)went through. They kept going until there was one person was left. The kids were really into it but it wasn't just the kids playing, everyone was lol. Just another suggestion. Hopefully no one said that yet because I didn't read through all of the responses.

Check out an online magazine (I subscribe to the magazine - it is terrific!) called familyfun.com. I love the magazines and wish that it had been out when my kids were little! IT is FULL of great stuff for kids. This months issues is about halloween, making costumes, making treats, theme related foods, paper crafts and just so much more. It is packed full of crafts, kid related recipes and cooking, and just so much. I love looking at the magazein and often don't even do anything in there but have a blast reading about it! I highly recommend it. I have gotten a few really good recipes off it - one was for Dinosaur Eggs - make them with coffee grounds and bake them (after you have inserted a little toy or soemting in the egg!) and the kids break them open ( well, more like pick at them as they were digging for dino bones!) and find the treasure inside! I do them for my GD's all the time and they just love them!

I am on the mailing list and just looked at some crafts today. I"ll soon have my 8 yoGD on weekends so I am getting ready! Cupcakes seem to be the big thing so take a look at those - a group of cupcakse in stead of a cake - and let each kid decorate their own cupcake! Did that one at a girl scout meeting once!Get on the mailing list and maybe 3-4 times a month they will email you updates of new things - usually themed toward the theme of that month - like now they are into back to school and halloween. But there are always crafts for all times- just do a search. And their magazine is only 10 issues for $10 - I renewed mine this past year for 3 more years. Cheapest magazine sub around and just choke full of fun stuff. I love getting that one in the mail! And them my GD finds it and she loves reading it. Just this issue there was a article about "how to make a fairy house" - it was written by someone that did it - at the base of a tree with all things found around the tree, nature stuff - a great project for a camping trip or day at the park. My GD just happen to be building a fairy house with lincoln logs nad other things we have around the house - started it over in the corner (she loves fairies) and I gave her the article and she read it (yes, actually read an article in a magazine - adds to her reading skills!)

That's cool...especially for the price. Some magazines are expensive. I got a couple free ones from rewardsgold and then I bought some for my sister (older one) for her last birthday. I also usually give her the ones that I get free from rewardsgold. I think they even had this magazine one time, but I didn't do it because we already get quite a bit. Sometimes when I got to check the mail there will be around 5 or more magazines in there. She has so many magazines in her room it is not funny. Some of the magazines I get from them right now are star, tv guide, blender, and vibe. Between those and the ones I bought her she gets quite a few. If you are interested in rewards gold magazine it is legit, I always get my magazines that I request from there. You don't really sign up for an account or anything. All you do is write a short review of something that they are asking about. The site might not look legit but they are. It takes a little while for you to start receiving the magazines but once you do you will receive them quite often depending on which magazine it is. Tv guide: http://www.rewardsgold.com/mags/tv-may08/sg_tvguide_1B.htm Blender: http://www.rewardsgold.com/mags/blen_em/tf_survey_blender_pg2.htm Working Mother: http://www.rewardsgold.com/mags/wm/sg_womother_pg1.htm Inc: http://www.rewardsgold.com/mags/inc/sg_inc_pg2v.htm Vibe: http://www.rewardsgold.com/mags/vibe/tf_survey_vibe_p.htm Golf digest: http://www.rewardsgold.com/mags/golf/tgs_gol_dig_pg1db.htm Boating: http://www.rewardsgold.com/mags/boating_em/tgs_boat_pg2s.htm Bridal Guide: http://www.rewardsgold.com/mags/bride_em/sg_bride_pg1b.htm Fast Company: http://www.rewardsgold.com/mags/fastco/sg_fcom_pg2r.htm I hope they all posted right, the link I mean. I will look more into the magazine, I might subscribe...I don't know yet. Thanks a lot!

I like pass the parcel with music and when the music stops the person holding the parcel gets it, you only have to have cheap things and it is a real ice breaker other than that there are a lot of party game sites on the net.. here is one http://www.partygamecentral.com/

When I was a kid I really enjoyed working with colors. A simple coloring activity might work. But if you want to be different, then you can prepare some bowls filled with different colored paint, then cut some yarn or thread and have the kids dip it in the bowl of paint for a nice abstract painting. You can also provide fruits or veggies to use as stamps for their artwork. Be sure to have a lot of newspaper and napkins handy though since this might be a litte messy. You can also let the kids play with clay. I love Play Dough, but it leaves a greasy trail on wood and glass surfaces. :(

You said she's eight, right? I know of this game where there are apples hanging from the ceiling, the children should be grouped into two and each pair will try to eat their apple the fastest; you could also play trip-to-jerusalem, in that game you wouldn't waste a penny, you only need chairs and a radio, I bet you know all about this game. There's a wide variety of games and activities in which you wouldn't even lose a penny.

I have never heard of that game before with the apples, it's definitely different. No I don't know about trip-to-jerusalem, just musical chairs. Thanks for the ideas though.

We are doing pin the tail on the donkey. I am surprised that I didn't even think about any pinatas. I don't think we can afford to take all of the kids to the zoo...for one thing my whole family is coming and that is a lot of people. It is just easier to stay at my house. We are staying outside for most of the party, if not for all of it. THanks for all of the ideas.

You can have a scavenger hunt. Write clues and then send them off to collect the items. Pinatas are always a hit. You can buy one cheap or make one and then fill it with candy. If you don't want to do that - have a candy scramble where you spread candy out in the yard and then have the kids scramble for it. Get side walk chalk and have them make drawings or trace their bodies and decorate and then take pictures of their art. Instead of having a birthday cake, make cupcakes and have the kids decorate them - they can eat one at the party and then take one home.

I didn't even think about pinatas, what was I thinking? I am definitely going to tell my mother about that one and see what she says. I also like the scavenger hunt idea. Thanks for all of your ideas, we will probably use at least one of them.

Well, there are a lot of classic kid games that all kids love. Like hide and seek and Red Rover and there are also cheap games at any party store. I think that you can get plenty of party games at a place like Party City, but I do not know if they have that store near you. You can also have Bingo, any games that you can give out prizes, 8 year olds like cheap little things and they have fun very easily.

Yes there is, and I just wasn't thinking. Some of the ideas people came up with I was thinking "why didn't I think of that". Thank you for all of the ideas. We do have a party store near by but I am not sure what it is called. We might go there in a couple of days. I know we still need invitations to send out.
