When I was coming up, my grandmother would not let us do certain things on Sundays because Exodus 20:8-11 reads:

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Do you keep the sabbath day holy?
Or is Sunday a normal regular schedule day for you?

I think the verse you just quoted was addressed to the Jews, as for me, Christians are no longer abiders of these laws or Sabbath Keepers. I wouldnt say that Sunday either is a Sabbath Day I think it is a day observe for worship, but God is not concern with what day, but He is more concern about the hearts of those who will worship Him.

When I was a kid we used to go to church on Sunday and then usually have a meal with family and just spend the rest of the day relaxing and spending time together. Now that I'm an adult and a single mother I have to work on weekends so even my church time is very limited. I would love to go back to the days that family could go to church together and then spend the rest of the day just being together. I really miss those times.

I try to go to mass as much as possible and try to relax and devout quality family time. Things that I don't have the chance to do during weekdays. When I was single I used to visit the elderly or children who are in an institution.

We too have always been told the keep the Sabbath day holy. I work 6 days a week and sunday is the only day that I am at home. So other than going to church the whole day is spent in finishing all the household tasks to make the following week easier. So unfortunately I am not able to rest on a Sunday.

Sunday is the much awaited day for me and my family. We look forward to this because this is the day when we can meet with fellow believers and worship God altogether. Sunday is for the Lord and we do give it to Him without any excuses.
Deuteronomy 5:12-15
-----------------
12Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee.
13Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work: 14But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine as, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.
15And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.

Hi there! Great discussion. :-)
Without getting too technical or lengthy, I'd like to add a few comments.
Accoring to the teachings of the New Testament, in Romans chapter 14, it instructs us to not judge one another in respect to holy days, things we eat, and some other things. It is important that we each have what the Bible calls a "Holy Day," which is for ourselves with the Lord. And too - God knew that the human body needs a time of "rest." Even medical science shows what can happen to us if we don't allow our bodys to rest.
I asked a Rabbi's wife about the Sabbath one day because I was curious about it. She said that the Western thoughts and teachings are so mixed up about many things, and one of them is the teaching on the Sabbath. She further said that it is a Jewish law, called the "in-gathering" law, and it is celebrated on Saturdays. The Jewish folks (here, and maybe all as a whole ?) do up thier work and attend their synagog on "Fridays." Saturdays for them, is about all of the family, eating together and having a time for the father to teach the children about God and what He wants them to know. It's also a time of games and conversation for the whole family - more or less - - a time to be "shut in with God. I thought that was really neat. It would do all of us well to have such times with our families. Maybe we'd have far less divorces, and learn to communicate within the family unit more effectively.
Lastly, also according to the New Testament - the 10 commandments were given as a tool to show mankind that we can't be righteous before God by TRYING to keep them. Those are a part of the law that is to point us to our need for God to help us, and by virtue of inviting Jesus into our hearts and lives, we don't worry about 'keeping' the law - - we find ourselves "resting in Him" and we are changed in that we are more and more drawn closer to the Lord and therefore, HE leads us in life, and the breaking of the commandments is no longer something that puts us on a guilt trip - because we just DO THEM without any struggles within ourselves.
This was a really good discussion. Hope I wasn't too lengthy with this response.

I was taught that that day was holy and to keep it holy, but I was also taught that that day was Saturday. For the most part, I do my best to keep it holy. I try to get to church. I have folk in my family that don't and that can be difficult, but I'm working on keeping that holy from start to finish.

Sunday is a normal workday for us, but it would be nice if we all took Sunday off to honor and worship our Lord.. Used to when I was growing up and when I was first married, most people were off on Sundays and most everyone went to church, but it is so different now.. A lot of families have to have both people working and one or the other might have to work on Sundays.. The day of both parents being off and going to church on Sunday is gone.. And that is sad..

When I was a child, my mother did not want us to do anything on Sundays, we couldn't iron our clothes. We did everything on Saturday, iron, clean the house wash clothes, go to the grocery etc. We went to Sunday school, and my mother would fix a big Sunday dinner, and relatives would come over.
Now, as an adult, I go to church every Sunday, but I do not restrain from doing other things such as household chores, going to the grocery etc. I keep the day, just like any day close to my heart.

I guess I just look at those old rules as exactly that... outdated rules that don't translate into today's world. Sunday is just another day for me. When I was younger, we always went to church on Sunday mornings and then had a nice family meal afterwards. Other than that, it was naps or play time, reading, or whatever else you wanted to do to relax. Now, it's pretty much the same, but I don't go to church anymore unless I'm visiting my parents.

Hi Chevee,
If only, I have to do everything everyday and I wish I could just have one whole day without doing a single thing and I am really fed up of cooking, who invented cooking I hate cooking.

We don't do anything special on Sunday. Go to church, come home and relax the rest of the day. We don't go shopping or do any kind of work. We believe that it should be a day of rest and that we have the rest of the week to do all of that other. There has been times that my husband had to work on Sunday but as far as working around the house, we don't do that. We just read the paper and watch some TV.
