Pardon me for being the know-it-all-post-from-wikipedia guy
An avatar (abbreviations include AV, ava and avvie) is an Internet user's representation of themselves, whether in the form of a three-dimensional model used in computer games, a two-dimensional icon used on Internet forums and other communities, or a text construct found on early systems such as MUDs. The term "avatar" can also refer to the personality connected with the screen name, or handle, of an Internet user.

In other words, it's something that represents you online.

Dear friends that belive "avatar" is just a little picture next to your name: "avatar" comes actually from the Ancient Egypt, where it represented the former incarnations of a person. It is used to describe that little image to reinforce the fact that is one of your virtual "alter egos"
