as we all know there are smart dogs out here and then there are some dogs that don't pick things up as easily and that isn't really their fault i don't guess its the fact that some learn easier...so i was just wondering what kind of dog you think is the smartest because i have heard that golden retrievers are really smart but i have a mixed dog and he is a really smart dog he is a eskimo spitz and pointer mix and hes really smart, so i was just wondering what you thought the smartest dog was? thanks for taking the time out of your day to read and review my discussion and maybe answering my discussion, i hope that you all had a great weekend and i hope that your night and the rest of the week this week is a great week for you, thanks again for taking the time!

I have three dogs. A Bichon, a Affenpincher, and a Shitzu.
Teddy, my Bichon is very smart in certain ways, but most of the time can not focus on one thing at a time, he is very treat motivated though. My affenpincher toby, is very smart and can learn new tricks in a single day. He is very focused, and is definitly smart at most things. Not sure about the shitzu, i just got him, joliet7

That's actually a very hard question lol. In my opinion, dogs are as smart as you make them. If you don't take the time to teach them things, you're not going to have a very smart dog. There have been studies done about smartest/dumbest dog breeds, but you have to wonder what they were basing that on? In each and every breed you're going to have some dogs that are incredibly smart and some dogs who aren't smart.
But, if you had to pinpoint me down to one particular breed that I feel is smart, it would be Border Collie. I'm not a Border Collie owner, however I have worked with many and they seem to be pretty smart dogs.
