As some of you may know I have discussed here my fear of high winds on a couple of occasions. Well, yesterday afternoon my courage was really put to the test. I had noticed the winds picking up in strength since morning. They seemed to increase their force until by early afternoon I had become genuinely anxious. The local weather forecasters had issued high wind alerts. I was busily preparing my dinner, watching a very good movie on TV, and playing a game on my computer when, all of a sudden everything switched off! I told myself that it was only temporary and the power would be back on in a short time. Needless to say, that didn't happen. I never got to eat dinner because the portion that I was cooking had grown cold sitting on the stove while I waited for the power to come back on. After about two and a half hours I decided to take a nap, feeling certain that by the time I awakened the power would be back on. Wrong again. It was about 9:30 P.M. when I woke up thinking that I might finally get to finish my dinner, but the apartment was completely dark. The air of eerie silence still hung over my building and all I could hear was the occasional sound of a door shutting or a neighbor talking. By this time I was in starvation mode, so I ended up going to the fridge and making a sandwich out of 2 hot dogs(cold). I washed them down with a Pepsi and called it dinner. According to the early morning news I am among the lucky in this situation because I was awakened by the sound of the a/c coming on as I lay crumpled up on my love seat at about 2:00 A.M. Many in my area are still without power and will not have it restored for a couple of days. Did your area experience any damage related to Ike?

Yesterday was bad for us both it seems. Storms in general don't scare me, but add high winds to the mix and I start to freak out. We had to remove the window a/c units from both the kitchen and bedroom windows, since both were nearly blown right out of the windows. We watched leaves and tree branches fall all over the place, plus had several large trees fall. One house caught fire when an electrical pole fell across the roof and sparked. We were without power for nearly 5 hours towards yesterday afternoon. No significant damage happened to my home as far as I know, I haven't gone up on the roof yet to check that out. Do know that when it gets light enough outside to see and won't be disturbing anybody, have a whole lot of branches, leaves and garbage to clean up off my yard. Was sure a scary deal yesterday.

We lost power for about 6 hours. There are lots of trees and things down. We faired ourselves very well. We grilled hamburgers on the grill. We have an inverter and used a battery and had one light. We sat and played board games, and keeping an eye on the weather. They said on the news that people may not get their electric back for up to a week. They have to get crews back, they had sent to the hurricane. I am thankful to have mine on.

I think we were one of only three houses that still had electricity after the winds yesterday. Trees were down everywhere, roofs blown off of houses and businesses, it was a mess. We were lucky, the only problem we had was the electricity flickered once yesterday afternoon. We still have power, my mom does, and my brother who lives not far from UC campus does. My uncle and his daughter stayed over last night because their lights are out, my brother stayed for GP. My sister, who ironically works at the gas and electric company, stayed at my mom's house with her husband because her lights are out.
Things here in Cincinnati are getting better slowly but surely. Some will be without power until Saturday though. I hope that things don't take that long in reality, but with such widespread damage, who knows.
