Well, congratulations! You have worded your question in a way to provoke a response, that's for sure! To say that most of the girls who drink and smoke are characterless is a pretty sweeping statement, which is next to meaningless. I'm sure that there are plenty of people (let's include both sexes here, boys are not immune to being characterless!) who have never drunk or smoked in their whole lives, who are very characterless!!! It could show character in someone to lead a pure lifestyle, but could depend on the reasons why they did this... is it just because their religion says they should do this or did they make an informed decision?
I haven't looked at your profile, but making a bit of a sweeping statement (!) would say that you're probably quite young; a teenager or early twenties and are from India!! Maybe I should have looked at your profile, before I said such a thing!!!!!

Dude...i totally agree with you ...but i think you should`nt have pointed out the fact , that he is from india and that`s why said such a thing....THAT`S WRONG....showing that if one guy is being a male chauvenist ....all indians are like that...i think you don`t know any indian personally....so this makes me feel your remark equally mean as his..!!

Yes, I have to admit, I should have thought a little bit more, in wording my response. I only guessed that the person who started this discussion was Indian, from the fact that they had used an Indian name "Patel"! In no way was the comment meant to be racist. The first bit stands though that the person was a teenager or in their early twenties. Of course it could be said that the young person who wrote the statement was sexist, in that it assumed that only girls could be characterless!

HI.
How old are you?
I think you're still quite young to ever think of people that way. Drinking and smoking does not convey an individual's personality, my friend. I've been around a lot of people and it's really quite unfair to say that girls who drink and smoke are characterless. It's better to get to know the person first. It's never good to typecast or label people.

most kids who drink or smoke are bored, and have nothing better to do. it is something to do for them. you dont see nerds drinking and smoking a lot. they r too busy studying to get high grades that they dont have much time to drink or smoke. it is just something to do..nothing big deal...that turns into a bad habit they cant stop when they finally figured their life and want to do more in it.

Some young people who drink and smoke and partying do seem characterless, don't they? I think some of them feel like they have to "put on a show" by doing these things to fit in. Not necessary. I don't think all girls who do this have no character, but I understand what you are saying.

heyy....dude...just remember this as a fact....smoking or drinking....can neven define a persons character, specially girls....all my friends are smokers and drinkers..but i don`t think they are characterless ....this is the attitude that we indians really need to change in ourselves....talking about a women`s character without personally knowing them is not at all right...and such remarks should never be appreciated...

And I might also add, smoking is pretty ugly and nobody likes kissing Master/Miss Smokey-Breath. (Do they? I may be wrong).
Drinking is a little different though. Excessively drunk people are rarely much other than amusing in a rather sad way and/or a burden when you have to get them home safely. But you must not write off all people who drink as lacking in character. Some of the most interesting conversations take place in pubs or at parties when people have had just enough to give their voice box a kick start.

As has been said above, you'd be well advised against drawing sweeping inferences about personality from these behaviours.
I will however back up your point a little. I think it is the case that during adolescence (I presume this is the group from which you are drawing your sample) smoking and drinking can be about conformity for some people. It takes considerable courage and having the confidence in one's own personality to do what you want to do and what you think is right. It may well be the case that the girls you're experiencing smoke and drink to fit in with a particular social crowd where it is the norm. And in this crowd 'character' is something they subscribe to rather than something they develop for themselves.
