surplus or band new? which one?

yesterday i go to a car sevice for my car to change oil. i sat at the man next to me, i was reading a book then suddenly one man ask me if your car had to go for some repairs and some changes in the parts would you go for a surplus/second hand or the brand new? i answered no.. he ask me why i said i'd rather go for the brand new than the one that is used already... then he smiled back and said good for you. at least you can assure of the parts. i realy dont know why did he ask me that question... how about you guys what do you prefer? why? i was just wondering, coz some people would rather go for a surplus to save more...
