I saw this billboard ad the other day with a picture of all sorts of potatoes with their names and it read 'Spuds, Know your onions'!
I guess a good ad is one that makes you think and one that teaches you something as this did both and I found on checking it out online that a potato is also an onion.
An onion would also a classification of vegetables according to Wikipedia
The ad is for a spread and I thought the concept was well thought out as it will make people think more about it (wait, I thought potatoes were vegetables..)and then the spread in turn..
What do you think? Did you know that a potato is also an 'onion'?

I dunno about that, i thought onion is purplish in color and is shaped like a top?? But potato is brownish in color and it's like an oval shape.. How can a potato be an onion?? I have been eating potatoes for yrs ever since i was young, but i never knew about that.. lol =D
PLus, onion has got a completely different taste and smell too.. haha =D But potato is supposed to be a plant too, because there are potato leaves..

No, I was not aware that a potato was an onion. But, of course, I live and learn. I am never too old to learn something. My mother is 83 years old and I will tell her this in the morning. Now, of course, she may already know this one. It seems that they reclassify fruits and vegetables and don't tell us.

Good day... that's a nice trivia. I, myself didn't even consider it as a part of the potato family. Thanks.

Hey marina, I'm not exactly sure if I knew that. I knew
that they both were veggies, but I don't think that I knew
that a potato was an onion! Thanks! I love to learn new
things! That's what I mean, I learn something new on mylot
everyday! Very interesting stuff! It actually makes perfect
sense! Now I want a potato with onion in it! Oh, I don't
know! All that talk about the pototoes and onions just
reminded me of my Mom making potato pancakes which I just
loved and never made! Now I'm going to have to call her
and see if she remembers how to make them! I think it has
to do with matzoh meal or something and it is for Passover.
I hope she remembers or has it written down somewhere. They
were just so yummy. I think she grated potatoes so I'm
going to have to find another way because I don't even
own a grater. I'll get back to you on that!

I do not think a potato is also an 'onion'. At least that's not what I learned in school many years ago.
A potato is a tuber, about the most famous edible tuber around. Tubers are plant structures that can store nutrients for their parent, and these potato tubers are usually found underground at the thick part of the stem. An onion on the other hand is a bulb, just as garlic and tulips are. They are underground storage organs of some plants.
There's some similarity between tubers and bulbs, but tubers have many buds or eyes and they are covered with a tough skin, whereas bulbs are covered with dried leaves or scales.

Hi marina321,
No, onion is a onion and potato is a potato they are completely different one is a bilb the other is tube and you can't make chips with onions or mash. You use onions as base for most cooking but you don't use potatos.

The taste of potato is different we can't explain in words such a great taste of it. But onion is also one kind of curry it will be used in so many products more than the potato it will be the most famous than the potato no food can prepare with out onion such a great history onion has " EVEN A HAPPY MAN ALSO CRY WHEN ONION WAS CUTTING" it was crying all the people so that the potato and onion was not same both are lot of difference.

Hmm interesting information. I do know both grow underground and require similar conditions to grow but I believe that is where the similarities end.
