Exercise may Improve Memory

Apparently this study done in Australia. Memory tests were given to people who did regular exercise and those that did not over a period of six months.
It was found that those who exercised performed remarkably better in the memory tests than those that didn't.
The study also concludes that exercise improves memory in older people and delays the onset of dementia.
What do you think? Exercise is indeed good for us; do you think it improves our memory? Is exercise good for the memory?

Hello there, I don't know if exercise do in fact improve our memory. A lot of tests would have to be done to validate this relation. In my personal experience, I find that my memory is the same whether I exercise or not. I think when you exercise your body gets healthier thus your ability to focus might be greater than before which is why some of the respondents that did the memory test did well in it. Cheers^^

Hey marina, That's what they say! I don't really know. I am
not a big fan of exercising. I do my best to walk alot. That
is mostly because it is my mode of getting around. I used to
work out with my ab roller, but I haven't been doing that
lately. I find that my motivation level has decreased and
I am just not wanting to do much of anything. That is not
a good thing. So I know that I have to turn myself around
and get into some kind of new mindset so that I can start
feeling better and I do believe that some kind of workout
may be the key. It sure can't hurt!

Yes, exercise is definitely good for us.. I too never get round to doing as much as I'd like to but there's noticeable differences when I exercise. I am more energetic and do not feel lazt or sluggish like I do when I am not exercising
I will have to take note of the memory thing next time as I don't know if the research meant in elderly people or everyone in general.

Practise makes the man perfect.
As it is said, exercise really improves you. If you have the good habit of going on morning exercise then you live life in a very healthy manner. Its good that Australian doctors have included the theropy of increasing memory.

Yeah, definitely ^_^ Because exercises stimulates our brain to work harder to repair our body, telling our body when to rest and as well as protecting our body from fatigue.. SO as compared to ple whom, dun exercise, their brain is not as active, and thus when they are required to use their memory, they dun work as well as it has been idle for most of the time, and that they need more time for their brian to warm up b4 they can absorb the info ^_^
Thus exercise is good for our body, regardless on the outside or inside ^_^ We can never do without exercises, including when we are old ^_^

I think exercise is good for your whole body, even your brain! When you exercise you get the blood flowing throughout your entire body so it's inevitable that your whole body would benefit, including your memory. These results do not surprise me in the slightest.
In college my first 2 years I got ok grades, I was a little active but not much. My last 2 years I joined the lacrosse team so I regularly exercised everyday and even with less time to study, I did better in all of my classes. Whether that was a direct cause the exercise, I can't be certain, but I'll take that reason!

ooooops, when i read this discussion, everything suddenly makes sense to me. i always know that exercising is always beneficial to my whole body, but this is the first time that i have read that someone mentioned about it may improve memory. what i mentioned earlier about it makes sense to me, is that i am always get very lazy when it comes to exercising, yes i know it's a very shameful thing to be shared around. i always try to find excuses to get myself to have some workout. and for the past few months that i have not been exercising AT ALL, i come to realise that my brain power is decreasing slowly, that's why when i come to this discussion, it seems to make sense. and if it's true, it's really alarming to me, and i think i shouldnt find any excuses to go for jogging :(

I exercise a lot, and I do not think that it helps my memory much. Who comes up with these studies? Some of these studies are just completely bogus.

I strongly believe that exercising improves our memory because I personally experienced this, when I started exercising I always feel that I am fresh to grasp anything and automatically my brain works great!
Also, memory exercises can be very beneficial, I also like meditation because it improves memory very much!

I think it's true that exercise improves memory because it keeps our body active and strong thus delaying aging which includes memory loss. For me too since exercise makes us healthy in general it also helps us get a healthier brain right?

Exercise really brings immense benefit to people. I think without basing on scientific facts, exercise will really bring you good memory since the activity itself will make your blood circulation fast including the blood on your brain, making it more active, that is my opinion though. And I am one of the guilty people who always wanted to exercise but does not have the determination to do so. I really wish I can go to the aerobic class that I have always been wanting to attend.

I really don't exercise so I don't know. I have heard that exercise improves your memory among other good things that it does. I'm sure that I need to exercise. I do get in a lot of walking in a days time running after a 3 year old. My mother is 83 years old and has an amazing memory and she used to walk everyday.

Indeed, having regular exercise is beneficial to our body in so many ways but now that you mentioned that it improves memory, this just gives us more reason to exercise.

It probably does improve our memory. After all, exercise causes better blood flow, and that can only be good for brain function, I suppose. Mental exercise is also a good thing - doing crosswords, sudoku, etc., is said to keep your brain functioning well. A good diet would probably help, too, as our brains need certain minerals and vitamins.

I would be the first to say that the brain needs some kind of stimulation yes,if you dont use it then you lose it,and thats avery true old saying. My niece recently was given a Nintendo game boy,and her parents went out to buy the Brain training game, they couldnt wait until the little girl had gone to bed to load there new game ,and when they tried it they were shocked, their average brain age was about eighty,so the yboth set about trying to outdo each other, and the game Germbuster was one of the favourites,in a few days their mental age had got a lot better and this made them each carry on with the game,to sharpen their wits, and their brain power.Another relative always does the sudoku in the daily newspaper, and had found that the one star sudoku is now being completed every morning and has now gone on to the more difficult one.I have always liked to do the crossword and try to do the cryptic ones now and again but lol I dont get very far with them. But like anything to do with our bodies im sure that the brain does need to be exercised.

I think that generally speaking working out and exercising is good for you,but more so if you are older. It is very good relieving the stresses of the day,it can come as a welcome break,it improves your body inside and ouside as well, because it strengthen your cardio vascular system, making you less tired.Certainly after a workout I always feel much fitter and stronger.
