What are those stars next to some people's names?

I've looked for the answer to this but haven't been able to find it, so I apologize but I cannot figure out those stars next to some people's names. Some have different colors and numbers. I don't get it. And just to state the obvious, I'm new here. Feel free to add me as a friend or whatever.

that's the member rating..whenever someone hits 100 posts this star appear then his rating increase by increasing his posts until he reaches the blue star with number 10..that's all:)
