Do you tip at the hair salon?

Is it proper to tip your hair stylist? A friend of mine told it was rude not to tip my hair stylist. I don't see it that way. I'm paying her for a service which is usually never less that $55.00 . I do give her something extra if I just stop without out an appointment and she squeezes me in. I always give a Christmas gift. So what your view on this matter?

Tipping is nice. Usually, by etiquette, tipping is ten to fifteen percent of the whole amount of service rendered. Its not bad to tip if you have some extra cash on hand. Its not a requirement either. So it really depends on the tipper if he/she want to tip or not.

I tip stylists who are not the salon owners, if I am happy with their work. If the stylist is not the owner she is not getting the full amount you pay her! Part of it goes to the owner. So I think it is appropriate to leave a small tip in that case. A gratuity encourages service providers to do a good job again next time!

My stylist is the owner, it's her shop and she's the only employee. I maybe I will start tipping her more.

I do leave a tip but I don't agree with it, to me they are providing a service and have said how much their service is worth so why expect a tip...contradicting reply I know but I would feel rude if I didn't leave a tip.

I never felt rude before, but now that it has been brought to my attention, I'm feeling guilty.
