I used to have 2 hamster, Terry and Troy. Troy died about 2months ago. I was too sad as Terry was left alone. Eversince Troy died. I seem to neglect Terry a lot. My mum who adopt her after i get too busy with works and kids.
My mother called about an hour ago, just to tell me that Terry can't seem to stand. She thought Terry probably got biten by an ants. I was too horrified and felt guilty. I know Terry must have been old. She's about 3yrs old now. But i felt terrible about not being able to care for her after Troy died. Her little cage is not that clean anymore as it used to be.
I know i may lose her tomorrow. My mum told me she's probably not goin to make it tonight. I don't know if i ever have another hamsters as pets anymore. It's always hard for me to see them go. She asked me to buy another two again. :( I don't think I can. I always love their kinds. They are so adorable and keep playing around. But to see them go is really hard.
Does Hamster have little life span? I was always told by mum to buy another male hamster so Terry will be happy again. Are they (hamsters) choosey with their mates? Terry always get pregnant, but she ate all her babies! I was told they need to be separated in cage in case, but how will they survive without their mother?

Sassyangelee, I think you should buy another 2 hamsters. I know it's hard to see hamsters go, I've cried over them before, but it's good to know that at least I have given them a good life. Maybe you should buy another 2, they'll bring you lots of joy.

Indeed. Truly you make me look through past my sadness. What matter is that i give them shelter and feed them and took care of them, and in turn they give us joy. Thank you, i never thought i would get over my grief. I will certainly buy 2 again. hugs

I'm sorry for your loss. I had read that usually hamsters life span is 1.5 - 4 years depending on the classification they are in. Maybe Terry was lonely being alone.
Some animals do eat their young so you have to separate them. You would act as the mother of the youngster and give them what they need and feed them.
Since their lifespan is really short and you think you will only get lonely everytime they leave you i suggest not get another one. But if you think that you can acceot the fact that they will leave sooner or later and just enjoy them while they are alive then do as your mother wishes to.

Thank you Leixa. I have hard time seeing them die, and apart of me really makes me feel guilty. As if im one of the reason why they got sick and die. All i just wanted to see is for them to be healthy and playing around. They are joy to see...

hi sassy...it is hard and painful when you lose a pet. it is depressing as well. that is the down side of having a critter that you have grown to love and take care of. you learn their personalities. i don't know about the life span of hamsters. a former co-worker used to have white rats as pets. but they only lived for 6 months and they couldn't take their dying on them. i've heard that mice live longer.
now you say that terry eat her babies? Eeww. never heard about that before.

Hello greenglitterturtle. I like your name, really cute! I used to have guineapig. As they are not too costly to feed. But when i saw Terry and Troy in the market, i know i have to buy them. Terry give birth about 4x. But she all ate her babies after they were born. According to my research, it is probably because if these hamster babies got defects, their mother ate them instead. The chances for survival is little, if you keep them in the same care especially if father hamster is around. I don't know if Terry is still alive. I might check with her later. :( Thank you for responding, it was too kind of you. hugs

Terry is still alive! After 4 days. She must have want to survive. But I feel shes really sick right now. She's barely moving around. I hate to see her in this situation. I wish i could cuddle her and give her something nice to eat. She didnt even bite me when tried to give her a nudge. Really awful to see her this sick. :(
