Is drinking alchoholi drinks bad for health?

Alchoholic drink still remains a taboo; it has little acceptance in many contries including India. Is it really injurious to health? Or there is some other reason. In a conservative society like ours, people drink but then they have no courage to accept. Many do not get back home untill the effect of the alchoholic drink is gone. A good number of my friends hide this from their wives; and in many a cases this is the reason of conflict in the family. I have little knowledge about europian middle class although I see drinks being served in parties and people believe that tons of Alchoholic drink is consumed in other part of the world. What do you all say? Is this injurious to health? Is drinking a sin? Is this has no acceptance in women in the western societies?
