Do you enjoy reading book series or do you prefer books that are on their own? What are some of your favorite series? I enjoy series a lot. I like that you can really get into the characters. Sometimes when there is just one book with certain characters, you don't get as indepth with the characters. I also like to anticipate a new book coming in a series. Some series' I like are Dean Koontz' Odd Thomas books and Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. I have only read a couple of the Alex Cross books by James Patterson, but I think I should read more. They seemed good, I just always forget about them when I'm at the library.

I love book series', I mostly read books by christian authors my favorite series is called the Zion Covenant series. Its about the Jews and the Nazi's and the war and stuff. They have won many awards I have read that they are very historically correct and are used in some colleges.

I have never heard of the Zion Covenant series. It sounds interesting. I like history and it's cool that it is a series that is quite historically accurate.

Those books are so good that they are hard to put down. Both the Zion Covenant series and The Zion Chronicles series are incredibly well written and well researched.

I will have to look those up online and find out more about them. Thanks for letting me know about them.

I like series because like you said, you get to know the characters better. You can have continuing storylines, in-jokes, etc. However, once I start a series, I have to read them all. With the Dune books and the Centennial series (John Jakes), it got tedious near the end. I only finished them because I started the series. Right now my current series are: The 1932 books by Eric Flint The Demon Hunter Books by Julie Kinner The Falco Series by Lindsey Davis (I want the next one darn it) The Gordianus the Finder series by Steven Saylor and various others.

Dune is kinda complicated to explain. Here is the Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune_series The prequels and finale written by Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson are better than the last books of the series. Reading the article, I found there is a new one out. Off to the library to get it.

Once I start a series I usually want to finish it as well. I also hate waiting for the next book in a series. When you're really engrossed in one and then you know you have to wait for the next one it sucks. I haven't read the Dune books, but I know people who have. Can you give me a really basic idea of what they're about?

The Alex Cross books are very good. I've read a few of them, but haven't been able to find some of the others to read them. I had never realized there was 10 until I thought I was done and found out-I wasn't. I like Janet Evanovich books. She has a book that has a sequel and then a series with 14 books(and 3 Holiday ones). I've read all but the 14th book-which is 'Fearless Fourteen.' I think it's a good series and my grandma got me hooked on those. I also like The Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter.

I didn't know the Alex Cross books were a series at first, so the first one I read was either Pop Goes The Weasel or The Big Bad Wolf. I haven't read any Janet Evanovich books, but I keep hearing good things about them. I will eventually have to check some of them out. I only read the first Chronicles of Narnia book back when I was in elementary school, I never finished it.

I like both but sometimes a character comes along that you want to know what happens to them and it's always exciting to see what new things are waiting for them. Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic series is one of those. I know that the last book might be the end of the series and it's a bit sad because you're saying goodbye to someone. But if another book comes along, I'll welcome everyone back with open arms. Marian Keyes also has a series of books but it's a bit different. Each book is focused on a sister (there are five of them) from the same family. Even though it's about a different sister, the other characters still make appearances and it's like they never left. Sometimes you even get updates on what the others are up to now. There's just one sister left who hasn't had her turn in the spotlight yet but I can't wait for that, whenever it may be. And of course, there's always Harry Potter. It was hard to say goodbye after spending so much time with Harry and the gang.

LOL...I had no intention of reading Harry Potter. I had heard a lot about them and my mom bought the first few books because she was interested. But years ago when I was visiting my parents, I had finished reading the books I brought with me and I was bored. So I picked up Harry Potter and I was hooked.

It's nice when an author can create a character that you actually want to read more about them. It is sad when you know the end is near (or has already come) for a series you enjoy. I haven't read anything by Marian Keyes, but I have read some where the series revolves around different characters each time, but they all are connected in some way. I think I'm one of the only people on the planet who hasn't read the Harry Potter books. lol.

Try the 3 book series by Jasmine Cresswell, the books are Suspect, Missing, and Payback. They really are good. I am just finishing Payback and have enjoyed the story line and the characters very much. I think you would like this series.

I like both types, but it will all come down to the plot. If it's interesting enough to keep the series going, etc. Most of the time, it is, but sometimes I could see some that shouldn't be in a series in the first place. There are pros and cons with both types. And maybe the character or characters involved has to have something that draws readers in in order for the series to work also.

I like both, too. I agree that the plot has to be good enough to warrant a continuation. And if the character isn't interesting, then I wouldn't be interested in reading more of that character.

I love reading both series and stand alone books. My favorite series are Anne McCaffery's Dragon Riders of Pern and any of Mercedes Lackey's series or books. They are wonderful. And J.K's Harry Potter series is wonderful. I'll never touch Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series though. My partner read them, didn't buy them, and said they were ok but the last book was horrible. They were a series she would never buy.

I am planning on buying the Twilight books. I enjoyed them and so has my sister, but everyone has different tastes. I haven't read the last one yet (I'm waiting for my friend to finish it so I can rborrow it). I haven't read the McCaffery or Lackey series you mentioned, but maybe I should look into them. I haven't heard the Harry Potter series. There is so much hype about them and they just don't seem like something I'm just dying to read.

I just like collecting books and of course read them. As of now, I'm busy reading novels..LOL They're just like series in a way, just in compact. LOL I'm reading Beach House right now after reading Miriam the Medium. When I read it, I feel that I'm really in the story, the details etc. I appreciate the writers and novelists who write novels that are so good because I can feel the characters.

I haven't read the Beach House. You can really tell how good an author is when they create a character that you can really get into. Being able to connect with a fictional character is cool.

I enjoyed reading book series, it was quite fun to collect them all particularly if all the series were very interesting and got a nice plot. However, I read more often books that aren't series. So, for me, I think I prefer more books that are on their own, only few series that I quite like. Some book series that I really like are; Harry Potter, some romance novels of Judith Mcnaught, Jude Deveraux, and Nora Roberts, etc. and the rest of my collection are not book series.

I tend to read mostly books that aren't part of a series, but there are a few series that I do love. I'd have to agree that most of my collection are not series' either. When I buy books it seems I usually just buy ones on their own and not the series ones. I tend to borrow those.

I love books that come in series. James Patterson's Alex Cross books are really good, as is the Women's Murder Club series. Jeffery Deaver's books about Lincoln Rhime are really good too. On the lighter side, you can't go wrong with the books by Janet Evanovich about Stephanie Plum. They'll have you laughing out loud - literally! My all time favourite series is probably the Anne of Green Gables books, or the Little House on the Prairie books. I can't wait to read those to my kids.

I haven't read any of the Women's Murder Club books. I did like that show, though. I haven't read any of Jeffery Deaver's books, but I just saw one laying on my mom's bedroom floor. I may have to go check it out. I've never read any Janet Evanovich or Stephanie Plum books.

I'm not really picky. I'd prefer the single books only because it's cheaper. But I don't min buying the next book if it comes in a series. I'm also willing to buy the series if it's already available. But I've never had to because I have friends and cousins who love books so much that I just borrow something from them. I don't believe in books as an investment because I hardly read the same book twice, unless it's a textbook!

I tend to borrow books, not buy them. I either get them from friends or relatives or from the library. There are some books that I like enough to read more than once, so I buy them, or if I happen to have some extra money I will buy a new book by a favortie author, but that doesn't happen often (I'm usually broke haha).

Some of the authors would have 2 types - those stories with the same characters, and some on their own. It doesn't matter to me - I usually look for books by my favourite authors like Lawrence Sanders, Ed McBain, Ruth Rendell, the Kellermans, Anne Perry and others. I haven't tried Dean Koontz - what genre are his books?

I like when authors do both series and stand alone books. Dean Koontz writes suspense/thriller books, I guess...I've heard some people say he's like Stephen King, but I don't think Dean Koontz' books are necessarily 'horror' and I've never read any Steven King, so I don't know. There is usually some action and crazy twists to his books. His 'Odd Thomas' books are quite accessible for someone who hasn't read his work before. My sister isn't into reading at all, and even she got into them.

when i was a college student, i and my classmates spent so many time on series books, esp written by Jiyong and Gulong which most Chinese people will be deeply attracted. it's a good time for reading. thank you for your question reminding me the old but beautiful days.

I enjoy reading some books on their own, but my favorite reading is book series. My favorite series is also Stephanie Meyers Twilight series. I'm very disappointed however that it is over. But I am enjoying reading the draft of Midnight Sun. I also enjoy the Harry Potter series and the Work and the Glory series. I would love ideas on a series that will keep my attention. I don't do well with slow moving books.

The Twilight series is pretty cool. My friend got me hooked and I got my sister hooked. Now I'm trying to get my mom to read them. I'm sure she'll love them, too. I'm still waiting to read Breaking Dawn because I'm going to borrow it from a friend and she hasn't finished yet. I was really bummed when I read all the online drama/controversy surrounding Midnight Sun. It sucks that she won't be finishing and properly releasing it. I haven't heard of the Work and the Glory series...possibly something I should check out?

I read some Francine Pascal books when I was a teen/pre-teen. I didn't read the fearless books (or maybe I did read one or two of them), but I did read the Sweet Valley High books. I haven't read many classic novels outside of required reading for school.

it doesn't really matter to me I just love to read books. I like series books because I like to see a story expanded beyond just one book, but there are some that shouldn't be continued.

I enjoy books in general, too. I agree that some books really shouldn't be continued. Some of the later books in series are unneccessary...just like with movie sequels, they aren't always as good as the first.

I enjoy both series books and the solitary ones. But the beauty of the series books is that it keeps you involved for a longer time period and its like usually a family of admirers gets formed and they will discuss different theories for the upcoming parts and all that stuff that make the series books more enjoyable.

I enjoy both, too. It is nice how a series can keep you involved for a long time. You get attached to the characters and can't wait to see what happens next to them. I've never really gotten involved in the community of a series. I've never really gotten into the theories and stuff, but it is cool how people come together over a series.
