The necessity of getting enough sleep.

Getting enough sleep is as necessary for sustaining a balanced life as eating, drinking or even breathing. Although eight hours has been touted for years as the right amount of sleep, it is not necessarily the right amount for everyone. Some people do fine on as little as 3 or 4 hours, while others don't feel rested with less than 10. As a rule, young people need more sleep while older people need less, it is important however, that everyone get the right amount for them. It is during sleep that the mind and body rejuvenates itself and our long term memory is reinforced. Even dreaming may be important, as many great writers and poets have claimed to have gotten their inspiration from dreams. Do you feel that you get the right amount of sleep or are you usually tired?

I totally agree with you here. I am in my early 40s and find that 3-4 hours do me fine, especially as I take vitamins and other herbal supplements. I do a great deal of freelance work, so I am required to sleep in intervals rather than at one given time. This is not the best thing I am sure due to the fact that dreaming is something I have noticed has disappeared from my sleep habits. I enjoy dreaming when it occurs as it gives me the opportunity to write. Sometimes I vividly remembers my dreams and write them down or use my voice recorder to put down the details.
Here is what I do when it comes to sleeping: I wake up at around 630am-7am every morning and then work out about twenty minutes. I then set the coffee to brew while I prepare for the morning ritual of shaving and showering. Then I go and pour myself a cup of coffee and take it into the bathroom with me so that I can drink it while I am shaving. I do not take it into the shower with me. LOL. Then, I get dressed, still drinking my coffee. (I have already brushed me teeth and completed some other tasks). Then I sit down at the computer and start doing my freelance writing and other work. Then, at around 10am I go to the local diner where I meet up and have conversations with people about the day's events or the presidential campaign in the United States. Then at around 12:30pm, I meet my wife for lunch elsewhere. Then at 2pm, I go back to the diner, get on my laptop and do some more writing. At around 5pm, I return home and take about a 2-1/2 hour power nap and then wake up and spend time with my wife. Then she kicks me out of the house so that she can watch her programs and I go to the diner to have my coffee or soda and do more writing. Then I return home at around 11pm, spend some time on the computer and then around 1am-2pm, I am back in bed. You know what happens then.
Thanks for a great discussion topic.

I don't get enough sleep time, I don't want to sleep early because I get used to spend all night awake doing whatever I like to do, but after I start to work, the nights became endless and as I always sleep enough during the days, now is so hard to get the enough sleep time for me..

Well, I need at least 6 hours of sleep ,but my husband is older than me and needs more than 8 hours a day because he works nights ,and he needs to compensate for those hours at night that he doesn't sleep. In other words, it depends on the individual and the life style.

Hello pose. Thank you so much for the discussion. Yeah, I don't think that I have enough sleep. The so-called enough sleep on my side is supposed to be seven or eight hours, but in fact, I sleep much fewer hours than that. It is usually about six hours. I know that it is all because of my late sleeping habit which is not good to my health. Now I realize that I need to sleep more hours to get more energy for the next day's work. It is easier said than done, but I will try to sleep earlier at night like ten thirty and get up at six thirty. That will be good to me. Thank you again for your discussion, my dear friend. Enjoy your life.

I am certainly not sleeping enough. Even though I get around 6 hours daily, I still feel tired after I wake up. I think I need 8-10 hours of sleep to feel energized. I do dream and I dream a lot. This might explain my lack of quality sleep. My dreams tend to be meaningless and sometimes funny. I do thank God they are not nightmares. There was this period of time I was having nightmares for many consecutive nights. It was very disturbing.

I think I get the right amount sleep. I sleep 8 hours per day. I can sleep any time I like. Sometimes I do sleep 1am. The important is I have to sleep 8 hours, if not I will feel sleepy the whole day. I sometimes will think while sleeping. I am taking broadcasting course. Therefore I have to think new idea for script. Usually I will think during sleep. I can get a lot new idea while sleeping.

I am usually tired. I'm the kind of person who can fall asleep at will. At any given time during the day I could lay down and take a nap, no problem. From my understanding that is a sign that I am not getting enough sleep. I usually get 5-6 hours a day, but it just dosent feel like enough.
It is hard to get enough sleep being a college student and working 2 jobs.

Hi Tee, Thanks for coming here and I can well understand. Being a college student and working two jobs has to be very difficult. Hopefully when you finish college you will be able to settle into a regular sleep pattern that will be right for you. Blessings.

oh well just the other night I spend some time here in mylot and sleep at 4 in the morning, because of that I really feel groggy and my head aches, obviously I did not get enough sleep, but in ordinary days (when I sleep early and not spend time here in mylot in the wee hours)I think I had enough sleep, my head does not ache and I feel good, not cranky.

I always make it my habit to sleep at least 6 to 8 hours a day.
I also believe that getting enough sleep is very essential if we want to be effective in our jobs and day to day activities. I'm also a health buff and I want to live long so getting enough sleep is really a priority for me. ;D

If can not sleep at least 8 hrs. then you just consultation of a doctor. Because there may cause many effects on you. The main effect from less sleep is acidity. And if acidity goes up, automatically anger comes aroud you and you can not work anymore. It also affect on your eyes too. Which is very important part of a human body.
So if you can have a nice and enough sleep then it help you to pass your day nice.
SO HAVE A GOOD (enough) SLEEP.

I usually get around 5-7 hours of sleep a day and usually feel fine the morning after. However, I don't get tired until like 5-7 pm and then after that I'm wide awake even at 2-3 am when I force myself to sleep. I'm most tired when I sleep for like 12 hours. I don't know why though. I think 10 hours is the max I can sleep and feel well-rested. I like sleep when I'm sleeping, but when I'm up, I like staying up! XD

It's pretty much common sense to get enough sleep. 8 hours is needed to function properly throughout the day. However, I've gotten so used to sleeping 4 hours tops every night that my body can function just fine with only a little bit of sleep. Of course, I will grab whatever chance I get to take a nap every once in a while ;)

I would love to get eight hours of sleep a night, but it seldom happens. I have to get up and go to the washroom. Once I decided to go to bed earlier, hoping that would help but I was awake until two o'clock in the am so I decided not to look at the clock, closed my eyes but could not sleep. When I looked at the clock it was around four o'clock. And all I do is dream. It is very frustrating. I do take a slight nap about fifteen minutes in the pm, but I nap more on Sundays.
I do not know if I get enough sleep or not. It usually works out to about seven hours.

hi
I like to sleep 6 to 7 hrs in my daily life. The sleep we get is because of many reasons.
First reason is that if we sleep more than 10 hrs a day is thatwe are lagging with RBC count. We have to go and consult the doctor immediately.
Second reason is that if we get lot of bore then we will get sleep.
Thirdly when we are tired also we get sleep.

This sounds silly but I need to get myself back into sleeping only about six hours...for some reason if I sleep more than that I feel more tired, but I have to admit now and then I do sleep maybe up to eight hours, especially if I'm having one of those "lazy" type days or if I'm not feeling good. I've never been one to "leap" out of bed when I wake up, a real slow riser...LOL. And now that I have my nice new comfortable bed, I tend to linger in bed even longer...even my kitties who like to sleep with me seem to like my new bed too...heehee

Hi....yes I agree with you very much that the necessity of getting enough sleep is important. I normally get the right amount of sleep I need. I will be tired when I do not have enough sleep and also it will lead up to migraine and dizziness and irritation. The cause of my migraine has nothing to do with anything else except lack of sleep. So once I get sufficient sleep I'll be fine.

I really need to sleep at least 8 hours but due to work and other responsibilities sometimes I end up sleeping for only 6 hours or less. but sometimes when I'm in the bus or jeep I can't help but fall asleep. although it is just a short time I find it helpful to make me energize.
