Is it safe to reuse plastic bottles?

I'm a little cheap at some points in i like to reuse things when I can. I just watched a news story about BHA in some plastic bottles. They said most are safe marked with a 1 for a one time use. But I use the plastic water bottles, gaterade bottles and anything to fill with water. I used the Landers frozen bottles to put water it because its a perfect single serve for my children and they drink a lot of water. So I end up just washing them out and filling them up again since we use filtered water its also faster to have more water on hand in the fridge. I've heard its safe as long as you wash it good with hot water, but now i'm not too sure. my kids mostly drink out of the bottles and i use the larger bottles (like from soda, juice, etc) to store water for us to drink. Do you think i'm over reacting? i don't have much money to get something to place in the fridge to hold water which is why i just use whats on hand. i care about the health of myself and my children, heck, it seems like everything can cause problems or cancer these days. what do you think?

You see, its each to his/her own. I have been using plastic bottles since I can care to remember and it’s the same even now. Every time soft drinks come to our home, the empty bottle is used to keep water in the fridge. We have never had any problems. I of course wash it once a week with hot water and soap and since the bottles are transparent, its easier to see if anything is floating or if the bottle has become dirty…so that’s an added advantage.

yeah i'm the same. i use hot water and soap, if it looks like its getting too bad, then i place it in the recycling bin. they say its linked to things like cancer. they said even Tupperware too can have this chemical and even heating it would be bad and release the chemical. now, they even say on most things that you can heat/microwave. i hope nothing bad happens.

If it is your own I think its ok. If you are worried about bacteria you can always stick them in the dishwasher. It is cheaper to just put a filter on your tap. That way you save a load on bottled water.

emarie, Well, as studies have shown that there are issues with regards to the reusage of plastic soft drink bottles, I am still not very convinced. Especially, when these soft drinks which are much harsher in their composite than ordinary plain drinking water could actually be stored in questionable quality plastics. I mean where is the logic here? Anyway, I am not here to argue with the experts but in view of our family's health and well being, I do not think I would want to put them in jeopardy. I would also refrain buying plastic bottled soft drinks too. Not being a paranoid here, but I do have valid concerns. I bet, you do not know that experts have advised that people who drink energizing drinks should never forget to follow up with a swig of plain water. Reason? The energizing drinks contains harsh elements that could harm the enamels on our teeth! Now, imagine bottling these drinks in questionable quality plastics. It is just unthinkable. So, it will be the good old glass bottled and aluminium cans for good old me here. I would not want to question the studies concluded so far, but I would like to highlight one by Discovery recently in April and advise that you have a read about the quality suspicious plastic bottles and open up some horizons here. Take care and have a nice day. Ref: http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2009/04/28/water-bottles-health.html

I have heard its not a good thing because of bacteria but I do resuse now and then. I agree though everything can cause cancer! I am not sure if there is a way to escape it!
