i invited my bestfriend and her husband for lunch at home when they came to Philippines for visit. Her husband is an American and he just had this observation he said that having been to several Filipino houses already, he noticed everytime that each house seemed to have one thing in common - the picture of DaVinci's Last Supper on the Dining Area Wall. I guess since the Philippines is more of a Catholic country, Filipinos may have been brought up to value the Last Supper symbolizing that we always have to be thankful for what we have because God has offered His life for all of us. How about from other parts of the world, what picture do you have on your dining room wall?

Our dining room is decorated by a nature-themed painting. It portrays a winding but calm brook, flanked by thriving trees and various grass on either side. On the horizon, a small mountain can be seen and the sky is clear and blue. There are only two other painting in our house and both of them are nature-themed as well. One shows the beauty and brutality of a sea/ocean during storms and the other, the majesty of an eagle in flight. This is mostly because my mother loves things like these and since she decorates the house, what she says goes. I do agree with your observation though. The Last Supper is pretty common here indeed. I don't know whether it's because we're a predominantly Catholic country but my mother is as religious as they come, she grew up in a household with the Last Supper adorning her childhood home, but in the end, she chose her own decoration. Are we really that religious or are we just used to that scenery that we try to re-do it in our own households?

i believe tradition and religion really has a great influence on us, that's why. but i guess there is nothing wrong with not following tradition. If you don't feel like putting up those same pictures on your wall, then it's you choice right? it doesn't mean you believe less in God by not doing so. Maybe it just doesn't fit the perfect atmosphere you're mom is trying to project for her dining area. Thanks for responding to this discussion. Have a nice day! =)

In Christian homes where I come from in my state, many families have one of two different pictures. They are by the same artist, I believe. One is of a woman praying. And the other is of a man praying. My grandmother had the one with the man so I'm more familiar with that one. He is an old man at a table. There is a bible and reading glasses and a loaf of bread on the table. I think it may be titled "our daily bread" (as in the lord's prayer) Are you familiar with this one?

no, i'm not quite familiar with that one. growing up, it's just either the picture of the Last Supper or Fruits on the dining room wall. i guess, especially with Catholic families, it just goes to show how our Faith and religion affect or influence us as people. have a nice day rocketj1. =)

we are catholic and my granny put a photo of last super on the wall of dining area. I don't know why it's just a tradition in putting those photos, if not a last super it,s a photo of flowers and fruits. Which is hanging always on the wall.

now that you said it, i just remembered, yeah it's the same at our house, if it's not the last supper, it's fruits or flowers. i think it's already part of our culture and has been passed on from generation to generation. thank you for dropping by and responding rainmark. =)

Yes,I noticed that.I think maybe to remind us(Filipino)that we should share what we have to others. In some other country you can see hanging on the dining area are pictures of mixed fruits and flowers.

We just have floral art hanging on our wall here, nothing too striking but its art that you can live with for evermore and a day.If you choose modern art then I feel you will get tired of it,it dates and it looks out of fashion. But the conventional pictures they will go on for ever.I pass a house every morning ,and at the window the owner hangs what I assume is his latest piece of artwork, well he/she is extremely talented, and some of the work is very attractive, they obviously take great pride in it,and so they should.I often take another look at the window, just in case I miss the change of picture.I have taken a peep into the bottom window(nosy)and have noticed the table is filled with paints, brushes and pots for water.but it brightens the day up to see those pictures in that window.

maybe that's also why people like to have pictures of fruits or food on the dining room wall because it might somehow help in enhancing the appetite of the people eating in the area. and as for your artist neighbor, if i was him i would do that too. being an artist, one way of showcasing your art is by placing them inside your own house. that way when visitors come, they can see your work. there are a lot of things i want to do in life and being a painter is one of them. thanks for dropping by pikelet! =)
