I have discovered a great pass time for my son. My son is 4 and recently bought a dollar puzzle with his money at our local dollar store. He did the puzzle all by himself after I showed him how to do the corner and edge pieces first, and showed him how to separate them. At first a puzzle could take him up to 30 minutes. He loved doing the puzzle so much I went back to the store and bought each different one they had, I think we have about 6 now. It now takes him about 5 minutes to do one and he will spend sometimes 1-2 hours just doing puzzles. He'll do one, say "I did it, ALL BY MYSELF MOM!", flip it over and do it again. This is just so cool to me because I don't do puzzles. I can barely do one of his! My 6 year old daughter got a puzzle the same time he did and has yet been able to do it. I think she gets bored, distracted or maybe even overwhelmed by it so usually my son finishes her unfinished ones for her. My son, like any other toddler loves tv shows and movies and has even decided against watching a show because he wanted to do his puzzles instead! So do your kids do puzzles? Do they have something they just love to do instead of tv, its great to find a replacement for tv.

Activities like that are really good for children. Your son sounds like he is a very intelligent child, so maybe you should consider teaching him how to complete a Sudoku puzzle. They are a little challenging, but they are free and you can print them straight from your computer. I enjoy doing some of them, myself, but I think I would be a little more like your daughter. I can't sit still and do puzzles like that for hours. But, in all, puzzles are excellent activities for kids to do.

We love puzzles too. My daughter is also four and loves to do them. I am not sure which dollar store you shop at, but I love the Dollar Tree. They have a lot of nice puzzles there (like Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh ones). We have about 20 puzzles from the dollar store that we bought over the last year.
My daughter can do the 24 peice ones by herself, but we have stepped up to the 63 peice (I think I can't remember exactly how many peices they are). She needs some help with those, but I agree that it is a great activity.
