Texting

Do you practice safe texting? I ask this out of concern for the increasing number of accidents linked to people who were found to be texting when they occurred. I recently saw a report on a TV show that depicted random people just walking down the streets oblivious to everything while looking at the screen on their cell phone and texting. These people were so engrossed in conversing with whomever that they had no idea whether they were in harms way. I think this is ridiculous! I get nervous whenever I'm riding in the car with someone who is using their cell phone. They are trying to enact laws that will stop the use of cell phones for texting at inappropriate times. What are your thoughts on this subject?

The recent train accident in California may be due to the engineer texting on his cell phone. He had texted to some people just before the accident happened and appeared not to have paid attention to the signals. Many teenagers drive and text. It's scary, because unlike with the cellphone to their ear, they now have their eyes on the phone while texting and don't even watch the street anymore. I recently almost crashed with a kid doing this. I fortunately saw him coming up the street at a speed where I knew he may not be able to stop in time for the red light he had. Well, he had his head down, kept on driving, completely ignoring the red light, not even touching the breaks. I couldn't believe what I saw. I wish they would ban it. But those kids are so attached to their phone and text all the time now. They can be in the same room with each other and even would be able to convey a message without even raising their voice. Nope, it has to be text messaged. It's crazy!

I agree, jonesy. It is madness! As if it wasn't already clear enough that kids have no clue that they are not invincible. Adults should really know better.

That law went into effect in California in July and it is a good thing. Doesn't stop people 100% though. The day after the law went into effect we were almost cut off by a woman who was on the phone.

Bringing in laws is one thing, but enforcing them is the major crux of the matter!

I expect that such laws will be nationwide in the future, dawnald, and you're right that many people don't obey the law.

The funniest story I heard was on the day the law was enacted a guy was pulled over for using his phone. His excuse? His wife had just called him to remind him about the new law.

One lad was so engrossed in texting that he walked straight into me, and he had the nerve to tut at me! What if I had been a car instead! He could have easily of crossed the road oblivious to the traffic, far too preoccupied with texting! And he's not the only one I have seen do this! Then when there is an accident they wonder why, or worst they get mugged because their mobile is on show to thieves! I generally text when I am at home or sometimes at the gym. We have laws in the UK about fining people who use their phone when driving but it doesn't stop them! So laws are all well and good my friend as long as they are enforced!

But will they take responsibility for their actions? Wolfie howls with laughter! Responsibility is a dirty word to a lot of people and I swear it's been taken out of the English dictionary along with manners like please and thank you, sorry to digress!

You're absolutely right, wolfie! Any law is only as good as its ability to be enforced. Strangely, people will continue to take unnecessary risks no matter what.

Cell phones, like many things are just a convenience item, not a necessary part of every day life. People can live without the darn things for the time it takes for them to get to their destinations. Yes, they may be good to have in case of emergency, but they do not need to be turned on during the times where his/her attention needs to be on other things. It annoys me greatly, when I'm at the grocery store and instead of paying attention to what they are doing, they are talking or texting on those dang cell phones, and inevitably someone rams their cart on the back of my heel. Hurts like heck, and sometimes wish I could just smack that darn thing right out of their hands. Also I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of times I have been bumped into while I was walking by another individual who was texting on their phone or had people pull out in front of me when I was nearly to them, while they were talking on the phone. Even the hands-free stuff is no guarantee that their mind is where it is suppose to be. It's not only annoying, it's getting into the realm of extremely dangerous.

Very true! What it boils down to is some people buy these "conveniences", then lose their common sense. It's that lack of common sense that is becoming dangerous. Even noticed that lack of common sense with a couple of replies you got that were in favor of texting or talking on the phone while driving . People can wait, they just don't want to. Thanks for the BR!

I won't argue with you on either of those points, jeweled. Misuse of anything can lead to disastrous results.

There are already laws in California about talking on your cell phone while driving. You have to have a earpiece or you can get a hefty ticket. I don't text much--I would rather just call. But I think save cell phone texting and talking laws might be a good thing since there are some many accidents attributed to them.

As the accident toll continues to rise, Aurone, I'm sure further laws will be enacted.

Well I don't have a cell phone, but yes I do notice how people are so oblivious to what's going on around them while they text...In fact I just heard that the terrible train crash that occurred out in California was due to the fact that the engineer was texting a message and didn't see the red signal that would have alerted him that he was on the wrong train track

I'm sure that we will hear of more accidents attributed to improper use of these devices, pyewacket, and it does make one wonder why these people don't just use common sense!

I do not text at all, but that does not mean I am safe from all the others out there who do text, at the wrong times. It is scary. I do not ride with many people, and I do not ride with people who talk on a cell phone, let alone text. There should be a law against it, but it still would be almost impossible to enforce.

I am amazed, GG, that in spite of increasing evidence that supports the risk of getting brain tumors from using these devices so many people continue to even use them. It says a lot about our desire for anything that's bad for us.

They made it against the law from driving and using the cell phone and I think it should be against the law everywhere else. When you are driving, you need to concentrate on the road and other drivers. If you need to talk or answer the cell phone then you should pull off the road onto an exit or store, parking lot and talk. I have noticed that people that talk on the phones while driving tend to drive slower than other drivers and the traffic is bad enough already!

The use of cell phones while driving, clp, should be made criminal across the board.

I think cell phone usage period while driving should be against the law nation-wide. Its already against the law to use your cell phone while driving in New York and New Jersey unless you have some sort of hands free device. Texting is even worse because you have to look down at the screen. I don't drive, so I can't say anything except I wouldn't if I did. I do text while walking, but I don't do it when I am crossing the street.

Thanks for your concern but I'm good. I only text while on the sidewalk. When I get to the corner I stop texting, even if I am in the middle of reading or writing one, and I don't continue until I am safely on the other side. I have a small, stupid phone so I can see around it, and make sure I am still on the sidewalk and not about to run into a pole or things like that.

Maybe, drknlvly, for your own safety you should rethink your habit of texting while walking. We want you to remain safe out there.

Well, I'm proud to say that I've never been in an accident while texting. Nor have I caused any accidents however minor. :) But I do text when I walk and drive. i can't help it! I drive slower thought and I try to avoid texting unless it's really urgent. I think that old people are more prone to getting into accidents if they don't practice safe texting only because their reflexes aren't so good anymore and their texting skills aren't great either. It's just my opinion though. :P

I take it, mimico, that you have not heard of the accident that took the lives of three girls last year because the girl who was driving was also texting at the time?

I don't text while walking I know that's very hazardous especially if your on the street.. I only text when I'm in a safe place.. That's one good thing about the text, it can wait.. Whoever texting they can wait.. We must not to forget our safety first.. That law is really a must for public safety.. Happy mylotting...

I think that people text way to much anyways. If you have a phone, why don't you just call. It's much more quicker than typing up a whole paragraph (for most people anyways). What's the point of texting when you can call the person really quick and discuss whatever you want. Meh, that's just my opinion though. Anyways, yeah people should really be careful. Some people are just to crazy for texting. I remember just yesterday, two people were sitting pretty much next to each other on the bus (there was just an empty space between them). They were texting each other!! Wtf?

I have no problem texting while driving or walking or whatnot you just need to seriously pay attention to what your doing. Besides if you need to drive they have words that automatically spell the word out after you type the first letter of the word and then just skip to the next space for the next word, it's really not that hard. Anyway i don't find an issue with it as long as your not simply staring directly at it like most teenagers do i guess. Just be careful.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, dookie, but I would not want to be anywhere near you when you're driving! A person cannot devote his undivided attention to driving while doing something else.
