I hardly slept last night.... my daughter has a terrible runny nose and is coughing!!! I already have plug in vapor, humidefier inside the room, but still having difficulty breathing and sleeping. My poor baby:-( In the middle of the night, as I was in the middle of asleep and awake, i tried to embrace her and felt that she was sooo hot. I get a towel and wash her forehead and legs to cool her down. Got her temp and it was 102... she seldom have that high fever. This morning she was still hot, and i was trying to give her Tylenol. Ever since, she hates meds, and will not drink any of it. It has been a challenge ever since. Unfortunately, I was not succesful, tried to mix it in water, no good, mix it in juice, no good.... don't know what to do anymore!!!

Most importantly do not let her see you put the medicine in her drink. My son always hated to take medicine for a fever or a cold, but if I mixed it in his drink and he did not see me put it in there then he would drink the juice down without even knowing it was in there.

No, I am not stupid. Just because I do not want to torture my child into taking medicine does not make me stupid. You are rude. I did not ask for your opinion on how I give my child medicine. My comment was for the person who started this discussion not you.

A child is already upset enough when they are sick. This seems like a much easier way to get them to take their medicine. What is the difference if they take it all in one swallow or five, they took it.

My daughter just had a really bad cold and is finally getting over it. Another thing that helps is to fill the tub/shower with cool water, then turn on the hot water and sit in there with your baby, the steam works really well to break up congestion. To help with fever I always give my little one a luke warm bath and dress her just in her diaper and a light t-shirt. My daughter for some reason takes medicine really easily for me. When she is sick, she just sucks it right down. I agree with a lot of other post that you need to get the medicine into her some way, if you have to hold her nose and give it to her. As soon as I give my daughter her medicine, I give her, her juice to help wash away the taste. My daughter had an upper respiratory infection, we all actually had one, and had to be put on amoxicillen, I guess it is going around were we live. So if her syptoms continue, I would defiantly see her doctor. Well, Good luck, and hope your little on feels bette soon.

When giving her syrup medicines, I suggest you get a dropper or a syringe (without the needle) will do. Position her on the side and gently squeeze the dropper or push the plunger of the syringe. Placing her on her side (either left or write) assures that she might not be at risk for aspiration. If she got a fever, you can give her a suppository for as long as she's not suffering from diarrhea. I hope this helps.:)

melanie when your baby has a fever that high I would take her
to the emergency room and get some medical help. as she probably needs some antibiotics and a doctors checkup. a child that little usually needs some doctor attention.Your doctor might want
to hospitalize her for a day or two. I would see mydoctor and not put it off.

Wow. My son also soes not like medicine and he spits it back out. He is sick right now and I just mix it in his formula to get him to take it. Try holding her nose and blowing in her face. That will make her swallow. Good luck and I hope she feels better soon.

if you have one of those eye dropper things to give her the tylenol with, then when she starts to cry, jsut squeeze it into the back of her mouth. of course she is not going to like it or be happy, but that is how i did it with my children. i don't many babies who like it, but they still have to take it. get it in there any way you can

In my experience Children's Motrin(ibuprofen) brings down a fever better than tylenol. It is bubble gum or grape flavored. She might like the flavor of one of those. When my daughter has a bad cough we prop her up a bit. It helps her sleep better. And the coughing lessens. Could be from drainage from the runny nose. If she keeps up with the fever, you may need to take her to the doctor. If you suggest this, she might take the meds easier. Works with my daughter. She doesn't like visits to her doc.

There are a lot of medicine for kids with a fruitty flavor. Why not try it. You gave your tylenol. I din't think it's suitable for kids. Why don't you try asking your pedia, which medicine will fit the baby. You can also try using eucalyptus . you can put a little in her dress, just a few drpos of it. The baby can smell it. And I guessed it could help her breath a little bit properly. Medicine you can let your baby intake. try this carbocstiene for kids. just follow the dosage written. It will help you. If not just let the baby drinks a lot of liquid in that case it will help her a lot too. One more try to add it to her milk intake. just less the oonce into 4. At least she wont notice the change of taste.

I dont know if this applicable to you but what i did was , I slightly turn the baby sideways then i will press her nose then drop the medicine syrup to his or her mouth from that technique there will be no other way for him or her but to drink it . I know it will sounds awkward but if you have to force him maybe you could try it i dont know . Any input from others??

If your baby is still sick until now, and still not taking some medicines, try to mixe the medicine into the milk of baby's food.Or you need to give your force to it. Ask you husband to hold her and then hold the nose and force her to take the medicine.

i think it is better for you to confine her in the hospital so that the pedias can respond to your baby's sickness.

It sounds like you're doing the right thing in having a humidifier running. For the coughing, I would try rubbing Vicks vaporub on her feet and then putting socks over them. It sounds a little strange, but my daughters taught me this and it has worked everytime. Let me know if it works for you. My prayers are with you.

Hi Melanie1208,
this may sound harsh but it's for his or her own good...hold baby's nose and just let liquid go down her throat...it worked for my two...they're alive and well...33 and 18 and counting!!
Don't ever let a temp of 102 go without medication...there are too many other complications that can arise from that.
And the coolness of a towel is a good thing, make sure it's with cold water...this will help bring down the fever.
Hope good health is on its way to your baby.

hi gwoman, thanks ! I sometimes do that, but she knows it, the moment the meds drop in her mouth she spit it out. grrrr. so far a cold towel and lot of water is the only thing i could do for her right now. If it is still going on until tom, i might bring her to the doctor.

Come on Mel you can do it...even if you need a pair of extra helping hands to hold the baby's arms and legs...grab hold of little nose...don't let go...put spoon in and make liquid go down...do not let go until it is swallowed...believe me I've done this more than a few times...It'll work, try it...now if not you will end up going to the nearest hospital and you really don't want that bill or the treatment you may receive at the hospital...remember...racism doesn't stop at the office...it's out there everywhere:-(

if its vitamins you can mix it to your baby's milk. now if its because the baby is sick you have to give it. use dropper more easier to let the baby swallow it.
