Yep, its one of the offensive words listed in MyLot. Just tried to respond to someone with that word in it, and it wouldn't let me post until I took it out. Is this offensive to you? What does it mean? I was using it as another word meaning hit. I feel like I'm truly missing something here. Is it an acronym? Is is a bad word in another culture. Please make sense of this to me, why can't I use the word "w-o-p"???

I think that W.O.P is a derogatory word, an ethnic slur that refers to Italians, or Italian Americans, for some bizarre reason. I don't know the history of the word, or where it came from, but I believe the last time I heard the word, it was in that context. I had an earlier problem when I was talking about tossing a salad, as in TOSSINg a green salad in a bowl with dressing. Seems THAT also meant something bad and I could way toss----the-----salad. MyLot has strange censoring rules.

It is a term used to refer to people of Italian descent.
I ran into the same problem, but I was using the word in reference to music that was popular in the 50s. I think that Mylot needs to use a little artificial intelligence when deciding what is offensive.
The same problem occurs when talking about a certain part of the poultry when discussing food or recipes. The part I will refer to as the chest. --- you get the idea.
I thought it was funny when chicken recipes were labeled with mature contents.

Right. Let the AI use a few context clues with the words surrounding the offending word so they know why its being used.

This term is probably considered racist. Like the "N" word, that word refers to, I believe, Italians. My memory is a bit foggy because I haven't heard the term used in many, many years. But it is a racist word... when you think about it, because I really had to think about it for a minute repeating it over and over again until it hit me. Perhaps the word you should use for the term to hit would be whop, with an 'h'.

Maybe that is why the term flew over my head completely. Me being of the younger generation, I have never heard this term used at all, except between my friends describing someone hitting another. The next time I do use this term, I will be using it with the "h" included.

W*op is to Italian the same as saying the N word to a black or an African American. If we, being white, cannot say the N word unless one is writing a story about the civil war, or when it was all right to say it, then no one else should use the W*op word or other words that are demeaning to different ethnic groups.

Had I known that was what it meant I would have never tried to use it. I have never heard it being used in any context except meaning to hit someone upside the head. I don't know how that can relate to Italians though. I do apologize to anyone I may have inadvertently offended, I really did not mean to.

From what I have learned through this discussion is that it was a derogatory word towards Italians meaning With Out Papers. Meaning they were illegal aliens to the United States.

I never knew that word pertained to Italians either. Just like drknlvly, to me it means to actually hit somebody, especially on the head. It's weird how people come up with things to insult others, especially that word. Where did they get that term to describe Italians. That's kind of crazy.

The link above explains the expression in detail. If you have time to read it that is. I looked it up cause even I had no clue what the real meaning behind that word was, since it is the first time I have heard it.
You will have to copy and paste the link into your browser and take the periods out of the word at the end, since MyLot filters the word and won't let me post it otherwise.

It means Work Without Papers. Which, apparently a lot of Italians would do when they first came to the states, a very long time ago.

Well, I mean there were others who worked without papers, but I think people would rather hire them than the other immigrants. Therefore, they became known as .......

To me it was just a noise that you make when you hit a person, especially ontop of the head. I have learned now that its a racial slur against Italians. I had never heard of that though.

Yeah, from what I have learned this is an old offensive word describing Italians. Thankfully I didn't choose to stay ignorant and posted this discussion. Now I know why MyLot doesn't allow it, and why I shouldn't use it!

Right. MyLot needs to have a software that takes context clues so it can tell derogatory words from just regular terms we use in everyday life. No one has banned sp!c and span from using that name, and hispanics don't find the cleaner derogatory, at least I don't think.

i don't know what it means either! It is strange i have never heard it used before and don't know who it would offend, i think it is better off just to follow the giudelines i had a previous account cancled with no warning and had around $20.00 in there

Yipe! I hope that doesn't happen. MyLot should be able to see that I was just trying to get an explanation on this subject, and not trying to offend anyone. I am glad I started this discussion, now I know what the word means, and won't use it in a bad situation.

not too long ago i was reading a discussion about a chicken brea$t recipe.
that's right.....you can't use the word brea$t even if you're talking about a chicken recipe.
i think myLot needs to loosen the censoring screw a liitle bit......i mean most of us are adults and they do have an "adult content" box that i checked in my profile.
so i can share my chicken caccitore recipe with you, i just can't tell you what the main ingredient is.
the funny thing is, you can't say brea$t but you can say boob.

I looked it up, and I don't see a definition for it, even in the urban dictionary. Don't know what that means, and haven't heard it until now.

Hi drknlvly6781,
It doesn't really matter if the word you wanted to use is provocative in any of the 133,242,523,177,231,229 ways.
Some words can be so innocuous that I have a hard time nursing my bruised ribs (from over-laughing at the incredible censorship).
I don't know why censorship is even necessary. We are all big boys and girls here. True, there are some younger friends among us but is myLot that much a family friendly site? Are R21, NC16 or even PG frowned upon?
Beats me really but that's the stand taken by myLot.
In my opinion, we shouldn't bother to censor the words. If a member breaks rules i.e. something is posted and the essence of the posting taken in its entirely is wrong, then fine, just delete that discussion.
Don't make posting so cumbersome by inflicting censorship on the innocent masses.

Hi drknlvly!
I see you've found out what you needed to but I'm gonna offer some cartoon style alternatives with meanings :- Whap ! Scutch! (scutch to the side o' the head) Bam !(my personal fave) Wham! Womp! (I womped him real good). If I put anymore I'm in danger of re-enacting the old batman show!

I was describing my cat on a discussion once, and used the term Maine C00n. I was censored. For this example I used zeroes instead of the letter o. I guess that is some sort of derogatory word as well. Had it gone through, I would have been offending someone as well, and not knowing that I was. I think it is a good practice, but I do not see any harm in the word, "beast"
I think the word you were trying to use is whop.

Yeah I understand. If someone used the word c00n, its like they are really reaching for that slur, because its not used that often. Whereas if they used the n word, as long as they don't put the er on the end, its more like they are just culturally ignorant.
And sud, I will be using that word on here from now on.

Being from the South, I've heard a lot of slurs. And c-o-o-n is just as offensive to black people as the n word is. To my understanding, it comes from before the Civil Rights movement when white people would hunt down black people to lynch them... Just like some people hunt raccoons. So they called their lynch-search c-o-o-n hunting. Sometimes I get more offended when I hear c-o-o-n than the n word because the n word has become so mainstream (sad but true).

LOL Isn't it funny how you can say some words here and not others? I knew what your word meant - I'm engaged to an Italian. LOL Back in our home town there are alot of Italians, and Italian restaurants. Our favorite sandwhich in that area is commonly known as a "guinea grinder." (no clue why) Its made up of italian sausage, spices and a tomato sauce, with mozerella cheese melted on top and placed on a toasted bun. But apparently you have to even be careful referring to the sandwhich, because some of the Italians get irritated when they hear that term as well. So strange.

I was reading an article on the word w.o.p. and it also included the word guinea. It said that word was also a racial slur to Italians, so that may explain why they get mad when that sandwich's name is said. It's kinda a derogatory name.... Well, this has been my cultural lesson for today....

I didn't know what that word meant until I read this discussion. Per Saundyl, it is an acronym.
I think what you meant to say was whup which is an informal term used in place of "beat" or "thrash" someone...

Actually, whup is a totally different action. You give your children a whuppin, or you threaten to whup them. However, when you hit someone swiftly and hard upside their head, you use the term that I'm not supposed to use on here.
