The Lomography Buzz

Hello everyone. This is my first post so ill start it with my favorite hobby which is photography. Recently, I've met people who have started out another form of capturing moments-i can't use the term 'photography' as it will be the subject for this discussion- which is Lomography. These people brag and preach about shooting from the hip, shooting without thinking, and using vintage, dead-stock "Lomo" cameras that have been sold at an exaggeratedly high price. I've always believed that photography was all about the capturing and playing with light. So what does Lomography stand for? is it the using of "Lomo" cameras? the shooting from the hip? the spontaneous shots? or is it just a craze that some people want to experience.

When you talk about shooting from the hip, you don't really need a lomo camera to do that. You can use any normal camera and you have to be skilled at estimations. Lomography cameras are cameras that have special static lenses. Some lomo cameras have fisheye lenses while others have 4 different lenses that capture 4 different images on one frame. I guess you could classify Lomography as a sub-class of photography. It's kinda like fooling-around photography, it's not a very serious thing. I think it's just a fad really.
