I know a lot of my mylot friends are not from the USA but for those of you who are how do you really feel about pressing 1 for English? Do you think that all immigrants that come to the US should have to learn how to speak the language? Or do you feel that we should adapt to their needs and learn theirs?

I despise having to press 1 for English. English is the primary language. How about having the messsage in English and having people press 1 for a different language. I do not think that we should have to press anything. I think that immigrants should learn to speak English and should use it. I do not think that we are responsible for adapting to their needs and making it more convenient for them. When we go to a different country, people do not treat us special and do not adapt to our language. We have to learn theirs if we want to be able to talk to them. That is the way it is in the other countries and the way it should be in the US. Plus, we have such a huge problem with illegal immigration that if we are learning their language or not making them learn English, we are enabling them and making it easier for them to get by with living here illegally.

Thanks for posting. I whole heartedly agree with your response. If there want to be an American they should learn the language! In fact the idea of this has been making it hard for many Americans that "only" speak English to get jobs. That is just so wrong in so many ways.
Best wishes...

Yes, it has declined our available jobs. I mean now they ask you what other languages you speak. Like it is something that everyone should know. A lot of places are only hiring bi-lingual employees. Also, when I am out somewhere and I hear someone speaking in a foreign language, I always wonder what they are saying and what they are talking about. If there were foreign terrorists, we would have no idea what they were saying if they were planning an attack. I think they should be required to learn and speak English.

I don't mind having to press one for english. What i mind is when i actually get to a live person to talk to, there english is so poor i can't understand a word they say or there accent is so thick you can't understand them.

Oh yes I know what your saying. I purchased a computer from Dell and they have all there technical support service people from out of the county. (Believe me when I say if I would have know this ahead of time I wouldn't have purchased a dell) It is so frustrating when you are trying to fix a computer problem and the person giving your directions cannot even speak your language properly. Not to forget the fact that this type of service Dell offers is taking jobs away from Americans just so they can save a buck. Thanks for posting.

Dont get me wrong because I think Americans should take the time to learn other languages. But I dont think we should have to press 1 for english and expecially sit through the spanish before we can hear the english. When Americans go to other countries they are expected to learn other languages. So why shouldnt they have to learn ours as well?

Thanks for posting krysi17 I agree and also hate having to wait for the spanish recording. If I were to move to Mexico I would learn the language and I feel our country speaks English so when people move here they should adapt as well. In fact I really feel it should be required, it use to be before we became a land of the "Politically correct".

I think that if you are in Rome, you have to behave as the Romans do. If you have been accepted by a country, its your duty to learn the language and respect its traditions. Not learning the native language could hinder you from any job employment and is a major obstacle in life.
