Recently my partner and i moved in to a new house, we have elderly couples on either side of us so try to be respective of them, we both love music, and loud, but were always careful to turn it down when it gets late and never play it into the wee hours of the night very loud, but during the day, especially if were out in the garden, we dont hesitate to crank it up a bit, a couple of weeks ago one of our neighbours came and knocked on the door at 1.30 in the afternoon and told us, yes told not asked, us to turn the music off as his son works night shift and sleeps during the day, but if we listen to it at night we disturb everybody else but him?? is this my problem its during the day?? we shouldnt have to turn our music down during the day because of one person when we are so mindful not to have it up late at night for EVERYONE should we??

Hmmm well as someone who has trouble sleeping and sometimes naps during the day to try and deal with it I can understand your neighbor's point of view. It could well become your problem if the neighbor complains to your local council. I have no idea about the laws where you live but we do have noise laws in my country and they can enforce them if they so choose to. Now telling you and not asking was not nice as you could not possibly know about his son sleeping etc. We live next to a pub where they occasionally have live music and it often is not music we like but we have never complained as it is usually on a Friday or Saturday night. It seems to me that if it is a weekday then it can be a problem but weekends are fine. There are times when people are usually not sleeping, as in the evening, when it is ok to have music. I have often been woken in the morning to the sound of music playing next door and it has bothered me but I do not complain. I just roll over and try to go back to sleep.
