The keyboard and the cellphone keypad are now mightier than the pen,it seems, people are forgetting how to write by hand. Many orthopaedic surgeons have confirmed that cases of typing related stress injuries are on the rise.. In some experts opinion"if a child is taught how to write in an organised manner,she/he tends to have an organised character. The loss of this tool is worrying." Please share your opinions on this point. Do you agree with the statement of this expert?

Hi comfort, Yea, I really notice that kids nowadays have no patience in writing, they prefer typing and printing their reports or letters! And if they write, they love short cuts unlike before that we have less options, we will really write and try to improve our penmanship! Anyway, I have noticed before that the more organized the penmanship of my friends, the more organized also they are in their lives and vice versa but I do not know if that still applies this generation! LOL!

I agree with that but maybe hard for some specially now with all these technologies around, they are more dependent and their "patience" is being affected! But, when parents will help them about this for sure, it is possible!

Hi Checapricorn, I think it still applies that a person with a good handwriting tends to be very organized. Few years back when I used to teach in a school, I've seen this with the students and came to know the difference between both. I personally feel that children should be made to practice handwriting on and off. This will increase their patience also in general. Thanks for your response.

yes my friend the typing and the sms has really affected the new generation may it be the children's may it be the teens when i have seen that people are too much exposed to computer they tend to get more impatient and they have very less witting skills the handwriting of people are getting worse day by day and that is also a concern man.

Undoubtedly amitav, its becoming a matter of concern to see the declining condition of handwriting of kids these days. I think parents should do something to make kids improve their handwriting.

That's true, because of the computers and cellphone kids, are lazy to write proper, even in spelling they getting poorer in it coz they used to have shortcut the words. Using this computers too makes kids handwriting worst. I remember when i was kid i have really trained to write proper by my mother so the result i have organized and nice handwriting compare to my sisters who never trained well in writing.

Surely Rainmark, a person having good handwriting, tends to be organized in his/her life. I think we as parents should not take it lightly and make our children practice to write few pages a day apart from other activities. Good wishes!

I'm not totally convinced about it though it might be some truth in it, but what is more frightening is that they absolutely don't read anymore! And believe me, reading on the Internet doesn't count. Looks like we're getting back to pictograms. But if they (children) don't write anymore, who's going to create it? Computers? Experts? Sounds funny but it's really sad in its ironic manner...

yes it is sad to say that children now adays spend more time using their computers than pencils and ballpens, and because of that, they might end up having bad penmanship which is very shameful when they will reach adulthood. a practice in writing with pencils and ballpens develops a child's character because he/she learns how to be patient and be organized. although i am no longer a kid, i am having a handwriting problem too because i am using the computer more often, so i write like a grade one, i dont even have a good script handwriting :( i think there is still a solution to this problem..parents should impose rules in the house, the kids must do their homeworks first, practice their writing ability more, and spend lesser time infront of the computer.

I agree with you asselg that only parents can impose rules and make their children write so that they are in the habit of writing. I used to teach few years back when I had a period of handwriting. It gave me real pleasure when I used to see how children were improving their handwriting. This practice should continue in every house I wish. Thanks for your response.

Well, I have seen even kids recently asking if they can use the Computer to check Email, etc. and I know it is something that is becoming a big thing. I also think that things like Carpal tunnel, etc. are becoming more rampant from doing this, especially if you spend a lot of time typing online and other places as well. I know for me, I would rather send an Email or type something online most of the time over writing something down in person. Just is a lot easier as well.

I do agree with you that typing is much easier and convenient. Here there are few of my acqaintences who have not learnt computer(mostly in their 50s and 60s) so I have to write a letter to them. I keep on procastrinating before I finally write to them by hand, no other way. Thanks for your response.

Hello, comfort55! Well, writting by hand is getting out of our routine due to the technology. Man is always inventing new ways to do the things he used to do, but he always invent ways that would be easier. Children, in my country, are not forgetting it yet. We all have to write by hand at school. But the elder ones, they are. They leave the school, and then what do they have to do? Type. They don't use to write on their hands anymore. I don't know if we all should be soooo worried about it. I mean, of course it might be better to write on the hand and all, but I don't think that just because of typing we will all suffer. Human will evolve, the future generations will get used to typing and will find no problem. It's just risky, because you are counting on electric energy, which might run out... And then what? Then there you go, with your hands. :D I believe that handwritting is going to be an additional for our Curriculum in a few decades. Respectfully, Munhozmib.

No doubt technology is on the rise and for the betterment of mankind, but in this race , in my opinion there are certain traditional things which we should not forget . There should always be a balance between the two. We can't cut our roots also.

I make sure my children knows how to write illegibly even they can use the keyboard or key pad. It is really a big help for kids to know how to do it properly and neatly and just be dependent on typing. I set as an example. I write with them. They like it that way.

This is the best way to teach children, practice what you preach. When my kids were small I used to read books for them so that they should also do the same. I was not worried about their handwriting because they had one period of handwriting in their school in which they practised everyday.

I don't know if I agree with the experts opinion however I do agree that kids are not learning how to write properly,or spell because the computer does it for them. What really upsets me is that the teachers in school are now requiring that papers are typed and printed out. This only makes it it easier for kids not to learn these skills not to mention how difficult it can be for a poor parent to keep up with computers, printers, paper and ink.I really think teachers should be insisting on hand written work and then make the proper corrections on spelling etc.I think the teachers are being lazy and therefore making it easy for our children to be lazy.

Hi there..:-0 As long they are learning to read and write in the school then there will be no worries..:-0 When you already learned about that specific thing then for sure you cannot forget it easily..;-0 Well I can still say that writing by hand is still important because before I write an article to the computer,I always write it down to the paper to correct errors.;-0 Some children are really lazy in writing but some are not so it really depends.:-0 GOd bless and have a nice day.:-0

yea in my opinion there should be one subject of handwriting in school which would make students sit and write. It definitely hones their skill. Otherwise parents are there to help them out.

Wow unfortunately i think your right about the future of our kids because with all the teenagers texting now i could definately see this suttle task being overtaken by technology. I surely hope not because i have a tenth month old son and i guess that's all i have to do with my future because now i've got to teach him which i've never done before. Wish me luck with his future.

I believe this is somewhat true - I was never taught to write neatly, and so I am disorganized and have a highly ADD spirit. However my knowledge of computers is vast, as I know 5 programming languages - and I'm only 15 years of age. I do have an advanced vocabulary for most people my age, I believe it is the cause of all the writing I did earlier on in life. The electron and the switch are on the rise, however parents should at least set aside a few minutes a day to teach their children proper writing etiquette.

I could not agree more. People in my age group, and of course prior to my age group, were all taught how to write, but people in my brother's age group, and after his age group, cannot write if their lives depended on it. I do not mean to be mean to my brother or my boyfriend, but their writing is, and was for my brother, terrible! Absolutely dreadful! I look at their handwriting and it looks like chicken stratch. It is horrible. You can barely read it. I know that boys tend to have worse handwriting than girls, but this is ridiculous. Do the insturctors not teach writing in elementary school anymore? They cannot write a decent sentence, and they cannot write at all. How are these children to survive if they cannot write?

lol I'm sorry someone just doesn't forget to write by hand. I've been using computers and typing since i was 12. Im 23 years old and i write just fine. As long as they know their alphabet and know how to spell..they can write. And besides, in a lot of industries they don't write by hand much anymore. Things are done on computers...Technology is on the rise. If you need to get a memo out you can email it to people.. you don't have to write it out and put it on someones desk. Kids need to know how to efficiently use a computer and know how to type. I am an information tech student so i know from my learning that already 70% of the united states workforce uses computers and in years to come it's estimated that 90% of the workforce will be using computers. Keyboards, stylus and keypads are now the modern day pen. Technology evolves..so do we.

HI MissGia, I agree with you that technology is on the rise but you take an example of reading, most of the kids read online, but still book reading is better and no.of children reading books has increased as parents are realizing its benefits hence trying to make their children to do so. Samething is with handwriting, as day by day children are trying to avoid it, maybe sometime in future they might realize its benefits. Have a good day!

I had bad handwriting before typewriters. I had a wrist injury on my left hand and so I can only write for a short while before it hurts. I do see how handwriting helps, since you have to really concentrate at making perfection. But my opinion is that children should not use computers until they are of a certain age. It is not that their handwriting will go to pot, it is that they will be playing games instead of concentrating on their studies and flitting from one site to another is not conducive to good work habits. Wait until they get to be ten years old at least.

I agree, I also home school my son and hand writing is a big deal I noticed that when my kids where in public school their hand writing SUCKED lol I even asked the teacher why their hand writing was not even ledgable and she just looked at me like I had just slapped her. I'm talking about kids who where in 8th grade and beyond, when I was in grade school hand writing was something that was done every day and if we didn't hit the top of those lines with our letters we have to do it again it had to be readable and the teacher was very strict about it. Today I write very well when I use a pen and people comment on how good of hand writing I do. I look at my kids' hand writing, and they are in their early 20's (my two oldest one's) and it looks like a two year old's hand writing Anyway I hope to teach my youngest son to write good I tell him no one can read what your writing what if you have to write a letter asking for help and no one can understand it. He just rolls his eyes and continues to write lol.

Hi Amberina, I think these days it becomes mother's duty to look after the handwriting of their kids as teachers are least bothered . Kids don't realize the importance of good handwriting, but we should instill in them.Happy mylotting!

The keyboard is really being used vastly for everything nowadays. I think till the school level children use writing with their hand but after their school they rarely write. Like I am in the university and till now during the past one year in the university i have not done anything apart from some small notes with pencil. All my assignments and other things are done through typing. But is this really true that if a child is thought to write in an organized manner his/her character also gets affected????

Hi Rizzu, its my experience when I was teaching that generally students with good handwriting were quite organized. But never mind you can start practising now onwards!
