The bidding for an agency that will overlook the rollout of the proposed mobile number portability (MNP) will open within a week, telecom secretary Siddhartha Behura said Thursday.
He said the agency would be finalised in three months. "Six months from thereafter, we will roll out the MNP services in the metros initially and later in the rest of the country," said Behura
Under the MNP proposal, a subscriber can change mobile service providers without having to change the original mobile phone number.

I'm not sure if I understand correctly but I live in U.S. & the cell. phone number portability has been out for few years now... I myself have ported my cell. phone number 3 times now, from carrier to carrier when I switched... Matter in fact, I know one person that have carried his house phone number to his cell. phone when he moved... He has decided to go with cell. phone & do away with land line but didn't wanna lose his number because everybody he knows has that number... I'm not sure if it will work the other way, porting the cell. phone number for land line, but I know it works if you want to have your land line number ported over for the cell. phone number...
